Title: iZotope Ozone 3/4 MBIT+ ??
Post by: yug du nord on October 02, 2009, 02:12:49 AM
I'm new to the MBIT+ dithering scheme used in iZotope Ozone 3 and 4, and am just wondering what settings other use for the "Noise Shaping" and "Dither Amount" functions.

For "Noise Shaping" the options are:  None, Light, Medium, High, Ultra
For "Dither Amount" the options are:  None, Low, Normal, High

And after the MBIT+ dither...  do you just change the bit rate from 24>16 when back in Sound Forge?

I use MBIT+ exclusively for dithering.

Noise Shaping: Ultra
Dither Amount: Normal

After you dither you then have to Save As... with the *new* bit depth.  So if you have a 24/48 file you would resample first, then dither, then save as 16/44.1

Not sure what version of SoundForge you are using but the newest version (SF 10) has the MBIT+ built in.

Only one way to decide which noise shaping and dither amount to use:  try each and see which your ears prefer.

I think for most loud PA-based recordings I settled on Medium / Normal.  I remember struggling to hear the differences between some settings, but distinctly not caring for Ultra.  Unfortunately, I no longer have my test files to re-listen.

Can't help with the SF side of things...I always used MBIT+ with Audition or Samplitude.

I'm using SF9/Ozone4.  And the few shows that I've used the MBIT+ on, I've used the "Ultra" and "Normal" settings just as you do.  So, after I resample in SF (I don't think that Ozone4 has a "sample rate converter" does it?), I then dither with MBIT+.

After I dither, at the bottom of the SF screen it says "44,100 Hz" and "24 bit".  But since I already dithered in Ozone4, all that I need to do is right click on "24 bit" and change it to "16 bit" right?  Then save.

I just don't want to be truncating things.

And once again Brian....  you are the smart one to compare things....  I need to start doing that more often.

Yes, you resample in SoundForge.  The default resample setting of 44.1 w/ antialais is perfect.

Yes again.

Resample in SF >  Dither with MBIT+ > Save as.....16/44.1

Sweet....  thanks for info and confirmation...  greatly appreciated man!!!  +T

I'm very familiar with SF, but iZotope is new to me....  and I can be a slow learner with software sometimes....   so this is great!  Thanks again!!!

How do you like SF10?  I'm gonna upgrade sometime this month.

I use Ozone as well.  Instead of using SF or Wavelab for all of your SRC needs give R8Brain a whirl.

I love R8Brain for the stretch feature coupled with the spreadsheet to give you great results in a numerical value

This has always slightly confused me about the MBIT+ for dithering.
Seems that any other plugin, I've used/seen that deals with bit depth
or sample rate conversions will display the result in the lower right
corner of the screen (using Wavelab 5) once it completes.  MBIT+
does not do this.

If you have to save as with the new bit depth, what process is really
being used for dithering?  Not sure about SF but Wavelab will dither
and resample just by simply adjusting the settings in the save as dialog,
no third party plugin required.

So I run MBIT+ with no indication of success (ie, bit depth is not updated
on the screen) then I do a save as.  Which step actually performed the
dithering?

After dither with MBIT+, you should have a 16 bit file and all you have to do is save.

I never cared for Ultra -- seemed to take too long, and I couldn't tell the difference in sound.

You should check out the Ozone Dithering Guide.   http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/ozone/OzoneDitheringGuide.pdf

It's a pretty good not entirely technical overview of dither.  You'll also find the correct instructions on how to use the plugin correctly.  Note the SoundForge instruction on page 30.
