24 bit truncation on JB3
« on: October 30, 2004, 01:10:43 AM »
Did some digging and found out that if you send a JB3 a 24 bit signial it will truncate it down to 16 bit.  Now is this truncation an awful thing, or will it sound the same as recording at 16 bit straight up.  The reason I bring this up is that I want to send my laptop a 24 bit signal out of my UA-5, but I also need to run the JB3 out of it too.  Also I need to turn the adv switch on to achieve this.  Thanks for the help

it will be a bad thing. you should just let the ua5 decide what goes out to the jb3 and not let the jb3 truncate stuff. looks like you are limited to either just the lappy @ 24bit or both at 16bit

This is one of the true beauties of the AD2K+, it will send out both a 16-bit and 24-bit signal (24-bit must be on the AUX output though). And the JB3 is acting no differently than a DAT or other 16-bit device acts when it receives a 24-bit signal.

Is it bad? It seems to work and sound fine to me?

I send 24 bits out of my Flying Calf to the JB3...am I missing something...?

however when I tried to send a 24/96 signal to my jb3 the playback was super slowed down, not listenable by any means.  I ended up just sending 24/96 to the computer via usb and an analog signal via the rca outs to the jb3.

When I set my V3 on 24 bit for a lappy recording I also record with a JB3 from the V3 using the mic out jacks from the V3 into the line input on the JB3. I use an external volume inline jack just before the JB3 to adjust the levels. The JB3 is more or less a backup recording but they sound very good as well even though it's not using the optical input signal. Just another way of recording 24bit with lappie and getting a 16bit recording from the JB3.

the header was wrote wrong. you would ahve to open it in a rec program and change the header to 96khz. been there done that, on accident

ah I see. well I still wouldn't want the dropped samples that have been reported with a trying to send a 96 kHz signal to the jb3.
