Title: iMovie Compressing Help Please!
Post by: LogicalDifference on August 28, 2007, 06:37:26 PM
Well I recently shot a concert, and I want to make it into a DVD. The problem is the file is about 9GB and my DVD can only hold 4.7 (obviously). I want to compress it just enough to fit on the disk without reducing quality too much. How do I do that?

I don't have much firsthand experience with it, but I know people use a program called DVD Shrink for that purpose.

What is the total runtime of the show?

dvdshrink is for pcs
and you don't want to do that with iMovie anyway
if its 9gb it is approx 45 mins long

depending on your iMovie version and if you have compressor installed you can do 1 of 3 things...
1 use the quicktime compressor and set the data rate at 8
2 use compressor and set it at 8
either way it will compress it down to under 4gb yet give you the highest quality (you can go to about 68 mins at "8" and have it be under 4.3gb)
you will then need to use apac or compressor to compress the audio to ac3
finally use studio pro and author/burn
3 use iDVD to compress automatically, author and burn

My bad.  I'm so used to seeing "iINSERTNAMEOFPRODUCT" that I didn't even realize we're talking Mac.

dvd shrink is pretty cool though, we have used it at work a few times
great for taking dvds and making a "backup" thats on a -/+r disc

highly recommended to anyone needing to make backups of your dvds on a pc

if you want to know why things are done like that settings-wise, or if you think you'll be doing this more often, look at this site.
http://dvd-hq.info/Calculator.html

it calculates what your target data rate should be.

basically it comes down to how long your video is and if you want to compress you audio.

Ok I've got another scenario for you. Everyone loves youtube and I am trying to upload highest quality videos from a concert I filmed recently. The clips themselves are about 4-6mins in length, but I wanna make em look nice for YouTube. Max size is 100MB. Maybe I should just stop being lazy and learn about video compression, but you guys seems to know what you're doing. Tips?? Thanks again.

i have never made stuff for youtube but there is the compression "for web" not sure how good it is or if its enough
look at that though and see if you can change the compression or if it gives you a ballpark file size

is it imovie 8? or imovie 6.xx?

anyway you dont need to compress, i movie can " encode" the video in order to fit on the disc.

You can use a DL if you have imovie 8 do you have a superdrive mac then you can burn DL, I usually have shows up to 12 GB and get them on a DL no problem just by encoding them thru imovie

imovie-share-share to iDVD them burn
