Need UA-5 modding recs for AKG 391/3s...
« on: April 08, 2005, 02:33:51 PM »
Hey. So I llike the 391s a lot, but they seem to be a little to dark for me. I ran them with a DMIC awhile back and really liked the combo because I think the DMIC is a pretty bright. I have a digimod UA-5 right now, and the only think that bothers me is that it seems to be a little lackluster in the highend (especially when you are further away.) So Im thinking that the T or P mods would be for me. It seems that after searching a little, a lot of people run the 391s with a wmod which I would think would only make the problems a little worse... Could anyone give me some of their experences? I emailed Doug and he said he recoments the T mod... I donno, will it brighten them up over the stock UA-5? THANKS!

I don't know about the warm mods, but I run them with the FP-24 which is a very warm box, but it puts the sound right where I want it to be, enough high and low.  It gives it the warm feel and helps with the brightness.  Compared with the standard UA-5 digimod it improves warmth and brightness which may be the same effect a warm mod will do.  Also I believe the warm mod was designed for the AKG's so that probably was the reason for many people's choice.

I made a couple 393/391 > T-mod recordings.  I liked the combo.  I don't know that it was necesarilly brighter than going into a stock UA-5, but it had much better detail, and tight punchy bass.
