Which model is the Shure donut mount everyone is talking about?

A55M?

Forget the Shure donut [a53m], I have one that I used to use for my active setup but have even switched that setup over to Rycote now.  The Shure donut does not provide comparable isolation nor is it as durable as the Rycote INV's.  You will really get what you pay for with the INV's and they should last you a lifetime; they won't break, no elastic bands to replace, integrated cable strain relief, superior isolation and are light weight too.  The small amount over your budget roughly [$20/pair] will be well worth it for you.  Once you have them you will not need to replace them later or regret the purchase.  Definitely read the "Keeping Microphones Quiet" paper that John Willet linked.  I've used busman, audio-technica & shure donut shocks but none were/are as good as the Rycote's and I wouldn't go back to using the others.

I use clips (not shocks) most of the time... I can't remember the last time I heard a sound because of it.  LD's yes, SD's, no.   A kit of 184's comes with clips, so Neumann must think it's OK.  Same with Nak, AKG, Earthworks and Schoeps to name a few.   That said, if you have really pristine finish on your mics, jamming them into tight clips a thousand times will scuff the finish, but the same goes for some shocks.  If that scuffing is a big concern I think AT8410's are probably the most "gentle" to the finish.

rycote inv - something like this for km184's?

INV-7's are recommended for km184's according to the attached chart but the ones you linked could also work.

I'm glad this topic came up, because I strongly dislike the Busman shocks for my KM140s and would like something else.  Someone mentioned that his mounts come in two different sizes.  I don't recall choosing a particular size, but I mentioned what mics I wanted them for when I purchased them.  The mounts I received are extremely tight for the KM140s and I don't like how much force I have to use to squeeze them in.  It didn't worry me as much initially because of the felt lining, but that lining is now wearing off, so I'm liking them less and less over time.  I had originally purchased the AT8410s and love their design, but I think they are too big for these mics (unless I'm using them incorrectly).  I would love to find some mounts that are designed exactly like the AT8410s, just a bit smaller.

There is a 20 mm version and a 22 mm version.  Contact Chris at Busman and explain the issue.  Maybe he'll send you new baskets.  I've found him to be very reasonable.

Saw these in another thread, anyone else have experience with them?
http://www.tensimount.com/

Bought a pair of those years ago and, IIRC, they worked alright for my needs.  Then I discovered the Rycote InVision mounts and never looked back, lol.  Pretty sure I still have the Tensimounts but don't know exactly where I put 'em.  If anyone is interested in them (provided I can FIND them), shoot me a PM.

The Rycote INV-6 will also work just fine for the km184's.  I use that model all the time for AT3031's and DPA 4021's.  The only difference between the -6's and -7's is the spacing between the lyres on the -6's is closer together to work for shorter mics.

With the INV-7's you can also move one of the lyres to get the same closer spacing as an INV-6 if desired, allowing a little extra versatility in mic lengths.

As everyone knows, me and joe are in the same camp on this. Clips 95% of the time.
I understand using shocks as an insurance plan, I just choose not to because clips haven't done me wrong.
They also came with my SDC Milabs.

Are the mics supposed to slide into the baskets from behind, or are they supposed to have to be snapped in from above?  The mics are 22 mm, and, as best as I can measure, the inside diameter of the basket is about 20.5 mm (including the felt).  Is that evidence enough that I have his 20 mm mounts?

The InVisions are the best/nicest, but for size and bulk, IMHO The Shure Donuts are my top pick :)

If I was running full bodied mics, Id buy those Busman shocks and a shure vert bar and BAM.

But if you want the BEST, IMHO, thats an Audio Technica AT-8415 Shocks w/ K-Tek K-SUS Heavy-Duty Rubber Mounts ;)

I slide mine in - I wouldn't think about trying to snap them in for fear of cracking the basket.

These are identical to the 22mm ones Busman sells, but didn't come with felt. I put some in myself, and it made them functionally 20-21mm.

I picked up a pair a couple months ago. I made an offer for 2 at $12 each and they accepted. Mailed from China I think, so it took ~ 1 1/2 weeks to arrive.
