Best pre for Neumann 184's
« on: July 16, 2009, 08:11:29 AM »
So what do you think is the "best" pre to run behind 184's?  I was thinking about a V2 but am open to other ideas.  Been thinking about getting a pair 184's to run U89> V2 + 184> V2> Oade Mod R-44.  Any feedback would be great.
Microphones: Neumann U89i, Neumann KMR 82i, Neumann AK40/50>LC3>KM100.
Pres: AETA PSP-3
Decks: Zoom F8, Sony PCM-M10, Microtrack

Don't know about the best, but I love the KM184>V3 sound.

Plenty of samples at http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=%22ken%20hannan%22%20AND%20collection%3Aetree (after you filter out The Radiators boards)...

I know that using the word "best" is just silly.  It was only done to antagonize; forgetting that sarcasm never comes across well on message boards.

I also ran km184 > V3 for many years, and I thought the combo was great.  I'd imagine that km184 > V2 would be very similar (and also great), given that the pre-amps are just about identical.

Rite now there is a v2 for 700 and a v3 for 800 in the yard sale.  At that price it's hard to say no to the v3.

I ran km184>v2>adc20 and it made great tapes.  Personally, I think the 184's sound better than the 140's.

I used to run that rig as well. Great sound, although the ADC20 was not my favorite. I picked up an AD1K and was VERY happy with the results.

But KM184 > V2 is a great combo. Top notch analog signal path!

RE: 184 vs 140 - I think I liked the 140s a tad bit more although I never did a head to head, so I am not 100% sure on that. I think there were very slight differences but on the whole I really liked them both.

I've been running a Sound Devices Mixpre behind mine for a while now and getting some nice results as well(just remember to run some inline pads in front of it since the 184's are unattenuated). I also used to run a MOTU Ultralite mk3 in front of them which sounded good but I think the Mixpre does better on overall depth and complexity.

if interested in some source:

my first show with the Mixpre(I was a little wild in spots, read the notes):
http://www.archive.org/details/nms2009-06-06.flac16.km184

same band/same venue 5 months earlier with the MOTU:
http://www.archive.org/details/tnm2008-12-30.flac16.km184

I haven't had the pleasure of running a V2 or V3 behind mine yet so I can't give a comparison but I'm sure you couldn't go wrong with either.

Great mics, I love mine, the U89i combo would be interesting. I have had excellent luck mixing km84i's with the 184's in a 4 channel configuration. I would think the U89i's should do well too.

Hope this helps,
J

Rig: Neumann skm184 or Neumann skm140 > Sound Devices Mixpre > Olympus LS-10 or Korg MR-1

Just ask the axis, he knows everything.

I got a v3 for 800 in the yard sale but am looking into this little box.  So it's going to be U89+KM184> V2+V3> Oade Concert Mod R-44.  Can't wait to put it all together and record something.
