Duration Computer Recording ??s
« on: April 21, 2012, 07:21:06 PM »
Does anyone have experience with recording 8-12+ hrs onto a computer on a single take...  Any recommendations?

The local univ radio station will be broadcasting large portions of our Jazz festival and I would like to be able to record these in addition to what I catch FOB at the main stage.  I don't think leaving one of my recorders behind is an option, my R09 will give out at ~7+ hrs and I haven't tested the LS10 for longevity (and I really want to run that w/ my new 853s).  Ideally I would like to run reciever > external soundcard > laptop and would like to hit record before leaving, and stop after I get home (which will be 8+ hrs daily, probably closer to 12+ saturday).  For software I currently have Audition 1.5, Audacity 2, etc...

Also, anyone want to give me a compelling reason to record from FM at anything more than 16/44.1?

I have a few days to test things out, and oodles of HD space...  Thanks in advance & feel free to move this if it isn't in the right place.

 :)

You can use CDWave as your recording software. It's been a long time since I've done so but iirc you can specify how long you want the session to last. It'll be a couple of hours til my Windows box is available and I can check then but I'm pretty sure you can go at least 4 hours and I "think" it is only limited by how much space you have on your hard drive.

Brilliant!  Actually something I keep on my usbkey (runs as a portable app) so that I can cut shows away from home.

I forgot all of the features CDWave has, I just fired it up it has plenty of options, including a start time.

 :D :D :D :D :) :) :)

Reaper is another alternative.  You can specify at what filesize you want it to split the files.  Or you can just press a key to instantly split at that point (eg during applause or whatever).  Also you can set it up so that only an unusual key combo will stop recording, to avoid accidents.

Got the Reciever > External Soundcard > Laptop/Reaper rig up and running.  Filesplits at every gig are what sold me.  I assume it's seamless?  I'll report back.   ;D

Just realized I never reported back.  This worked great.  I forgot to change the setup from mono to stereo the 3rd day, but oh well.

another alternative is VLC but glad to hear it worked out for your last year!

..or just use the AC wall transformer to power the R-09.

I bought mine retail and still have the box (probably w/ AC adapter still in it) lol!

Yep. It's probably in the box along with the way too small capacity SD card they included which was no larger than 2GB, maybe only 512MB, I can't remember.. which might make 12hrs if recording to MP3 format  :P

I have been sitting here for months checking every day for your report!  :)  Glad it worked well.
