Mic and recorder settings?
« on: March 10, 2012, 04:32:16 PM »
I recently joined this forum and it has been more than helpful for me to find like minded people that stealth record concerts!!!!

Because of this forum I recently bought a Sony PCM-M10 recorder, and also ordered some church audio ca-14 mics.
I have always used a mini disc to do my recording. And my first concert is coming up  in a few days and I haven't had a chance to try out the recrder in a real world situation.
So my CA-14 mics arent here yet so I am going to be using my old mic which is a Sony ECM-719. I am in row 22 of a 2,000 seat arena.

Can anyone help me out with some good default record settings, I of course will use the opening act to adjust on the fly. Should I use the plug in power on the recorder, or the battery supply on the mic? Should I use the mic input or the line in? What should the record settings be?? That kind of thing? Any tips would be so helpful, as this is going to be recording with my new recorder.

Thanks everyone in advance!!!

Wait for a word from the experts, but you might get a better sounding recording using the internal mics of your PCM-M10 compared to the ECM-719.
Mics : Sony ECM-717, MM-HLSC-1 (4.7k mod), SP-CMC-4 (at853), 2x DPA4060, 2x DPA4061
Battery box : SP-SPSB-6524 w/bass roll-off filter, MM-CBM-1
Preamp : Church Audio CA-9100
Recorders : Sony MZR-700PC, Edirol R-09HR, Tascam DR-2d

imho best to use the battery supply on the mic. If it's only the mic and M10 go mic in with plug in power off and the level on the M10 on 3. The warmup band may not be as loud so you probably go with 3 1/2 on the level. Record in  24 bit so it gives you headroom in post if you need to add gain.
Mics: CA-14 (o,c,o)
Remote Power: CA-9100 pre-amp, CA-UBB battery box
Recorders: Sony PCM-M10, Tascam DR-2d
Cable/s: custom 6" GAKables Mini Starquad
Batteries: Maha 9.6V Imedion, Maha Powerex 2700 mAh
Chargers: Maha MH-C9000, MAHA MH-C490F 9 Volt

Thanks you guys for the advice. Since this is my first time recording with a flash recorder I'm really at a loss for where my record settings should be.

Drgiggles1 I really appreciate the info I will try and use the settings you suggested. The show is tomorrow and will report back and let you know how it went  :D

fandelive: I wouldn't even know where to put the recorder without it being seen. I'm sitting on the aisle seat and I know this band is super hardcore with security, so I feel like using the ECM-719 mic is going to be a better plan to not get caught recording.

Again thanks again to you guys for helping out a noob!

Drgiggles1: the settings you recommended were spot on!!!!
Ended up trading a friend for his 2nd row ticket and the recording came out so good. So happy with the M10. Even with my older mic there was no distortion.
Thanks again for helping me out you guys!!

Would you share a sample? I'm curious how the Sony ECM719 sounds when the taper is really close to the stacks. All 719 recordings I've listened to were taken from distant seats. Thanks in advance :)

I love how Bean quickly glances through threads barely comprehending the original posters inquiry, then makes authoritative posts that often are irrelevant.

He has one hell of a post cont though!   ;)

 :)

I am curious to hear a sample of the 719.  I have used it for acoustic guitar but never amplified music...

 :P ;D I love yinz guys!

For real tho, if a newb came to ts.com and needed help on mics/pre/recorder, they should see the BILLION threads asking the same thing. We should have a thread that just insists that you buy Church Audio Mics/Preamps/etc. and thats it :P ;D
