Panasonic HC-X900M Iris Control?
« on: April 10, 2013, 11:43:01 PM »
Hi -

I just got a Panasonic HC-X900M camera and I will be using it to shoot live video. Sometimes the shows will be very dark, sometime very bright. I will need to control the iris. With all the other cameras I've owned, it has been simple. One control. However with this camera, it seems like first I set the Shutter speed, and then from there I control the iris.

My question is, how do I know how to set the shutter? If I leave it at its brightest setting 1/60, I can then turn down the iris if there is too much light. However, what is the price I pay for the 1/60 shutter? What if I could get the same exposure level with the shutter at 1/180, say, for example?

Could someone explain to me how this works, and give me a ballpark of how I might first decide which shutter to use? I worry that I might set the shutter too dark and then not be able to set the iris open enough to get a decent picture.

I'm confused by Panasonic!

Thanks,
Bill

For video you want to use 1/60 shutter if you are filming 30fps.If shooting 24fps you want 1/48 shutter and when shooting 60p you would use 1/120 shutter.Yes you can  control the exposure as you would in photography using a high shutter speed but at the cost of strobe like video effects. If using the standard shutter speed related to frames per second is too bright you than should use a Neutral Density filter instead of altering the shutter.

Beatkilla I dont believe you are right about the 1/120 shutter speed for 60p,  you still use 1/60.  60i and 60p are both 60 frames per second the only difference is one is interlaced and one is progressive.

You are right about shooting live footage at 1/60 shutter.  I use the TM700 but i believe it is the same, when in manual mode at the bottom left of the LCD there is a 'F' button fron there set your shutter to 1/60 and then adjust gain/iris as needed

Also in super dark conditions I know my tm700 has a 1/30 shutter speed and I would assume the x900 does too, but you have to turn it on in the menu system.

Also why didnt you get the X920, its a much better camera

No 60i is 30fps(actually 29.97) and 60p is 60fps.

correct  but
its called 60i for a reason, it is 60 interlaced fields per second

use the 1/60 or 1/30(low light) shutter speed when shooting in 60i or 60p video

I am following the 180 degree shutter angle rule maybe you should read up on it too.

Thanks for the comments here.  Everything worked well, and this camera has a beautiful picture.   I actually bought the camera at Xmas when it was cheap.  I didn't know about the X920 at the times.

What are the differences between the two cam's?  Is it worth trying to upgrade to this new one?

main differences is the x920 has larger sensors, plus wifi and other features.

x920 is going for $1000, if your happy with the x900 then I would stick with that.
