More Important: Bits or sample rate?
« on: December 25, 2004, 10:48:08 PM »
Wondering in theory what may sound better: 16 bit/48khz or 24bit/44.1?

Asking because of the new Edirol R-1.

Wondering if recording line-in into a JB3 @ 16/48 will sound as good as 24/44.1?

Ultimately I will wait for a device that has digi in and 24/96, not 24/44.1

Oddly, I just compared for fun my V3 analog out>JB3 (44.1) vs. V3 digital out (44.1)>JB3
using my stereo and I was shocked to like the sound of the analog out better! Yes, using the JB3's A/D!

Of course, this is very subjective. I'd say some detail was lost and if I was critically recording in a studio I might prefer the V3 A/D but I just liked the sound better and may like it better for PA recording. This is my next test.

Bit depth increases are far more likely to be audible than sample rate increases. I'd say 24/44.1 or the 16/44.1 copy sourced from the 24/44.1 (using a good dither plugin or hardware dither on your V3/Mini-Me) will both sound better than the 16/48 copy.
Out of the game … for now?

Just look at the file size. 24/44.1 gets you a lot more data than 16/48.

I don't even think the time to dither 16/48 down to 44.1 for cd's makes 16/48 worth the effort. ymmv.
