Title: Beyerdynamic MC930 info
Post by: aberg on December 20, 2006, 11:01:34 AM
These mics look interesting, and at $765 for a new set from BHphoto, if they can beat the km184, I'm intrigued. Not looking to spend any more money now, but just looking to learn more about these mics. Those that use them, what do you think? How do they compare to 481s?

It's unlikely that the price is still good.  Dealer cost for these mics is almost $100 more (Beyerdynamic raised prices on September 1st, I believe).

I wonder if B&H will honor this price?  The only person who ordered from them was Tapermark.  Not sure if he's gotten his mics yet though...?

EDIT:  They destroy KM184s.  Have never compared them to 480s, but they destroy 460s too (even JWmodded).

PM Tapermark and see if his finally showed up from B&H.  I know he had waited some time.

Mine came from FrontendAudio.  They were a bit more but I recieved them 2 days later.  Customer service is sometimes worth the additonal money.

Well this is my ears speaking, but, I like these alot more than 481's.  I've not owned 480's but have borrewed and run them.  The CKx series cap always have left me wanting more.  They just seemed a bit thin to my ears.  Of course this is MY ears, yours or someone else's may hear something else.  The adantage with the 480's though is multiple caps, the mc930 is a fixed card.  Of course this may be a non-issue with you.

Now, for what I hear on the mc930's.  Fullness across the frequency range.  Fantastic mid, great highs but not bright, and a full lowend but not bloated.  Representative of it's flat freq response chart.  Very smooth sound, detailed and transparent, but not overly so.  Some ultra transparent mics sound a bit harsh, almost too transparent.  These are defintiely not those.  Just a pleasing playback experience.  Of course these are my ears, yours may tell you something else.

Thanks for the info guys... it would be nice to find someone in town with a set and run a comparison. I'd also like to run a comparison with km140s.

There has been a shootout comp listed over on gearslutz awhile back.  Between the km84 (reference mic in the shootout), mg300, km 184 and the mc 930.  Do a search for " inexpensive km84" or something along that lines.  That was the thread title or part of it.  That comped sealed the deal for me in my decision to purchase mine.  If you want to listen to one of my sources, here is one:

Not really a shoot-out but me and Jon did tape PGroove in Huntsville.
mics at same location > W-mod Ua-5's

only difference is that I dithered and resampled from 24/48.

I still can't figure out why the archive has not converted my flacs in to mp3's yet?  I set to allow derivations.  Oh well.

I'm interested to see what others think about the two comps.

Interesting.  It *does* say they're in stock.  Previously it said "special order item".

Paging tapermark!  Can you give us an update?  Have you gotten your mics yet?

It says in stock until you add it to your shopping cart, then it shows
 Availability:   In Stock

Important Notice!
This is not a regular stocked item and cannot be canceled, returned or exchanged.

and they charge your card when you place the order, not when the item ships.
Hope Mark gets his soon if he hasn't already.

I cancelled the order.  BEWARE!  Avoid BandH at all costs.  I shit you not emailed em last week and got the answer again.  4 weeks.  That would have made the total wait 10 weeks for these mics.  That's if they would even deliver on the 4 week thing.  I figured it was a sign and cancelled the order.  So far BandH is 4 for 4.  All 4 orders cancelled because of the same thing.  No delivery.  I don't get how they get business.  Seriously.

Dirk linked a pair on ebay going for 799.  No one even bid on them.  They were new stereo pair.

As stated earlier though, these prices are probably gone for good.  Frontendaudio is charging 999, and after talking with Warren about the price he pays, this is VERY reasonable.  Given their performance, it's a steal.

That same pair has been relisted for the same price... I'm hoping sometime in the new year a used pair will pop up somewhere... looking forward to trying these out maybe for festivals next summer if they sound nicer than the ck61's... always keeping the ck63's since I haven't heard a better hyper.

Nothing wrong with hoping.  Just don't hold your breath... >:D

I have yet to see a used pair show up ANYWHERE (and believe me, I've been looking daily for the last 8 months in every conceivable place...!)

Closest I came was a single on Ebay about 3 months ago.

Finding them used is quite a task.  I would imagine it's because once people hear how good they sound they're reluctant to sell them.

Not saying that they won't show up on the used market, just saying your best bet is to just buy new (hell, you get the warranty and all that anyway.  it's worth it!)

No. First was a bag.  listed as in stock.  Second was a stand listed in stock, 3rd was a thread adapter listed in stock and lastly these mics which said special order but a 7-14 business day wait not 10 weeks.   :o

Not hard to get.  Just that price on B&H is what is screwy.  From my talks with a reputable dealer, with the changing euro/dollar rates, he can't even get them from the factory for the price B&H is advertising for sale.

Anyone dealer selling these for a grand (there is at least one that I know of), consider that a steal.  List is around 1300-1400 with price going nowhere but up in the future.

Fantastic mic.  I ran some comps the other weekend with my sto-2's, an adk ld (not the tl but the fixed card one), MXL ld (don't know the model #), adk sc-2 on an acoustic guitar, a Martin.  The mc930's were light years ahead of everything.  It was amazing the difference.  Everyone in the room noticed it.  The sto-2's were nice, but not as nice as I was hoping for on the guitar.  The 930's exceeded my expectations.

Surprisingly, the MXL was not as shitty as we thought it would be.  Definitely much brighter with a seemingly large high freq. boost though.

Sorry to hear about your experiences, but I've had nothing but A+ service from B&H. I've ordered literally dozens of times, and never had anything but wonderful results.
