Myself and I friend of mine recently taped a local band with our mics placed in the exact same location and orientation. For those of you looking for great entry level mics, this is a good comparison to look at. They both produced relatively similar sounds, while the Superlux mics (mine) were a fraction of the price. The superluxes were running into a UA-5 and the Oktava's into a Behringer mixer...

i never listened to it cuz i don't have speakers hooked up at the second, but i'd put money on the luxes.

Yeah, I'd put $$$ on the luxs as well, but the comparison would be a bit better if they had the same preamp as well.

I'd also take the UA-5 over the Behringer mixer any day of the week.

What were you taping with?  Were you using the UA-5 to do the analog -> digital conversion?

I just got a set of the SMK-H8K's and can't wait to try 'em!

Yeah, the UA-5 was outputting digital to my jb3... as per normal setup.

So, does anyone here know what's inside a SMK-H8K/C?  Is it just a diaphragm?  Is there an amp?  Does each mic have its own internal voltage regulator?  Do they require phantom 48V?  If you use less voltage, does it just reduce the mic sensitivity or does it affect the max SPL?  How is the differential mic signal formed?  Is it done by internal transformer, by connecting directly to the capsule or is there an amp with a differential output?

I'm trying to figure out what a minimum battery operated rig would be for using these mics.  Any hints would be welcome.

they need phantom 48v.  i ran one 9v to the ua5 that powered these and never once ran out of power.  *shrug* that probably didn't help much.
