Topic: lowering small section of file

Could someone please tell me the best way to lower a small section of a file in Audacity. I had the levels of my Tascam a little high at the beginning of a recent show and had to lower the levels because the meters were overloading. It doesn't sound great when I lowered the levels in the middle of the song. I tried the Amplify section of Audacity and lowered the db by about 6.5db. Thanks.
