Wanted to know what differences there are between these two mics? Is there a preference for one of the other?
thanks in advance
Kevin ;)

To my ears, the 480's sound better than the stock 460's. However, the Jim Williams mod 460's are superior to the 480's IMHO, and you could probably pick up the 460's and get the mods for the same price as the 480's!

Where would you get that mod and do you know around how much it cost to get it done.
thanks for the info

the only technical diff is that the 480 bodies have an extended freq. response over the 460's.......i believe its 10hz-30khz off the top of my head.. 8)
i wanna hear some modded 460's tho... ;)

Yeah, I know everything ;) go to http://www.audioupgrades.com and I believe it is 125 per mic. The difference apparently from the tapers I have talked to/met who use them is night and day. Hope this helps.
There are some mod 460 samples on the archive

480s have a higher output as well. They can be run line into an a/d with only phantom power (in most situations).
-
So with the mod does it increase the output and extend the frequency?

What are you guys thoughts on the 460's modded vs 480's w/ck63 (w/out ck61)? and what are good deals on these used?
-
EB on the oade board uses them. My real experience was a location recordist from Omaha whom I met at a moe show. He said the difference was night and day. I would really reccomend the mod...they smoke the 480's in the comparision taper he sent me, all running through a v3! I would send you a copy, but it is in Iowa, and I am in maryland. Check the archive for 460 mod sources, and find eb on the oade board!

what about this mod?

You need AC power to run tubes. Big negative for field use.

some clubs do have ac power available ,as well as onstage placements.
the tube mod is very interesting.maybe pay a little extra for dc powering?
