What's the best way to tag your music?
« on: August 09, 2014, 10:16:24 PM »
What can I use to tag my recordings with? My typical work flow is Audacity for editing then CD wave for tracking & traders little helper for Flac. When should I tag & with what so I don't have to do it manually ( especially in Audacity which is a wave anyway at that point)
I know you like, tape for people's approval and stuff, and wave your tapes around like they're your dick...  but even you can't actually think section tapes from philips sound good.

I use the Live Show Tagger function (with some minor editing) in TLH...

I use the Live Show Tagger plugin for foobar2000. Just put a properly formatted text file in the folder with the flacs, load the audio files into foobar. Then select the files, right click and select Live Show Tagger. Easy.

This is what I use and it is dead easy. I use the same workflow as he original poster - audacity, cdwave, tlh, but hen take he flac's into foobar and tags using a proper textile, super easy, and I love downloading shows that are tagged properly, a small thing to do but adds a lot of value.

Another vote for Foobar here. Once you get used to formatting your info files in a way it understands it's a really easy way of doing things.

Another vote for Live Show Tagger. You just need to format your TXT file correctly and it will do 99% of the work.

My only complaint is that it labels the album as: {Venue}, {City, State}. This would be fine if a band only played each venue once...but since that usually isn't the case I have to manually edit the album name with the date in it. Takes all of 5 seconds so it's not a huge deal.

Here is an example of my TXT file. It works perfectly with the Live Show Tagger. I'm sure you could change things up a bit and be fine.

Thanks for all the help, I used Foobar for the tagging but it didn't transfer the song names over. It said all tracks matched & all the other info like band, venue & date are there but the tracks are still my original file names & not the song names? Also, now that I tagged them in foobar I have to save them again to the original folder to retain the tagging? Usually from Traders I dump it into a folder on my desktop & from there I usually load it on my phone for playback in the truck. Wouldn't it make sense to tag in Traders? If so, how do I do it there? If not I can just delete the untagged flacs & replace them with the tagged flacs correct? The tags will still be there once it's removed from foobar?

was there any other textfile in the folder?  ie shntool.txt or ffp.txt?  sometimes those can cause problems.

how are your files named?  ie dbt2014-06-07t01?

sometimes the file names cause it not to work as well.  There are easy work arounds.

Can you show us the textfile?

just to clarify these are flacs and not waves?

no saving needed.  The tags get embedded in the files.  Move them all you want etc.

There are no other text files in the folder. They are flacs & the tracks are the original file name that my DR made during the recording so 140808_032_st1201 for track 1. Here's the textfile.....

I'm guessing your names are the problem.  too many numbers for foobar to tell what the track number is.  name them

I usually rename the whole file after I'm finished in Wavelab6  ex: wsp2014-06-27s1t   Then when it is put in cdwave, to track it out,  it numbers the tracks as you make them and foobar2000 can read them.

For 2+ set shows I still number my tracks in order. First track of Set 1 is 1. First track of Set 2 is the first number after the last track of the second set (in this case 12). I don't see the need to split shows up into sets by track # or by CD. Most people listen to shows on iPod's etc where there is no need for this.

As you can see the track number in my file names match up to the track numbers in the TXT file. This is what lets the LIVE SHOW TAGGER figure out what to do.

Txt file example:

My only complaint is that it labels the album as: {Venue}, {City, State}. This would be fine if a band only played each venue once...but since that usually isn't the case I have to manually edit the album name with the date in it. Takes all of 5 seconds so it's not a huge deal.

It should be noted that the "album" label that foobar does is not an actual album tag that other players/devices can read.  After tagging If you highlight all tracks and right click properties you will find the album tag blank.  I then enter the date and venue/city as the album.  like you said it only takes a second.  For me it's necessary or my squeezebox will have no album tag for the shows.

i get around the all tracks the same name problem by using the auto track number feature on foobar2000 -- this assigns track number metadata

Good point - it took a lot of frustration before I learned about that...

I'm with Mike B.  I can never get Live Show Tagger in Foobar to properly do a two-set show, so I just continue the number order.

Its a program with a lot of glitches.  If you have a number at the beginning of any line in your lineage, the number is all screwed up.  Also, if any song title begins with a number, its screwed.

I also have not been able to figure out how to get the folder to get the band and venue/date in iTunes.  All of my tagged folders show up with the artist and "unknown album" in iTunes.  Same thing on my iphone.

It should be noted that the "album" label that foobar does is not an actual album tag that other players/devices can read.  After tagging If you highlight all tracks and right click properties you will find the album tag blank.  I then enter the date and venue/city (copy/paste) as the album.  like you said it only takes a second.  For me it's necessary or my squeezebox will have no album tag for the shows.

best to do the album like 2014/08/11 venue city state

so the players sort it by year and not month or venue.

I DL foobar and the tag plugin. I select the files I want. see I can then do preferences. though I have to manual enter the metadata.

How do you open the text file to get the tagger to read it...searched the web and do not see how to do this?

thanks.

PS: Is there a tutorial on how to do this or video?

are you sure you got the live show tagger plugin?  they have many different tagging plugins.

http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_tradersfriend

you have to copy the dll to the foobar components folder.

Thank you gordon. Appreciate it.

I did not copy the dll into components folder only root folder of foobar. Now I can right click and select "Live Show Tagger".

Got the program to work. Most of the text came out correct.

Thanks again.

Thanks for this little trick, Crumbo.  I've manually done it but this will come in handy.  I wish someone would add this to the Live Show Tagger itself.
