all told it probably took about 5 hours over a few days i would guess.  i spent more time reading waiting for the paint to dry for recoat

there is a guy here who runs a junk / antique shop and he sells granite slabs from custom counters (usually the sink cut out part) for $20 / per.
they weight around 60lbs, and are beautiful.  I have a matching pair that I used as amp stands, but have since put my speakers on them (big difference, btw...better than spikes).

I was thinking about getting 3 more of them and trying to make a rack, but am scared about drilling into it w/o them shattering or getting ruined somehow.

60 lbs? No way you could safely put up a rack that's THAT top-heavy. How thick are the slabs? Anything more than 1/2" thick is overkill. I'll have to ask some of the guys at work about machining granite.

a 3 shelf job w/about 15" between racks and spiked feet going out at an angle was what I was thinking.

I've seen 100+lb turn table racks, so It can be done.
the slabs are probably 1.5" thick, at least.

Yeah, but aren't those TT racks generally single-shelf? Not trying to discourage, just thinking that's quite a challenge to have 60 lbs nearly 4 feet in the air. You'll  need some pretty sturdy rods to get that to work. The wooden "flexy" shelf I built was a little unstable with anything more than my laptop on the top shelf. That used 1/2" rods, I think.

You can get some threaded and plated 1" thick steel rods at McMaster for under $20 each for 3' lengths. They have thicknesses up to 2". If granite is machinable, maybe I'll make another rack out of that.
