Title: JB3 problem - recording sounds like dusty record
Post by: Nate on March 14, 2005, 03:47:04 PM
Here's one:

Taped a show...64>V3(optical mod)>JB3
Got home and put the file on the pc....played it and it sounds like I am playing a dusty record.   It literaly sounds like I am playing an old record and it's dusty.   The only thing I can thing of is that there was something (dirt/dust) on the part of the mini/optical cable between the V3>JB3.    Anyone have this happen?

Split this off since you'll probably receive more replies this way.  First, a question - have you recorded without problems since doing this:

I tried to solder it [optical connection inside the JB3] back on...which probably voids the warranty. Then again...the refurbs only have a 30 day warranty.

Thanks Brian.

Let me clarify:   I have 2 units.  1 is broken (the one I tried to solder the input housing back on)
2nd unit is pretty new.....I recorded a show last night and didn't have the "dusty record" problem.
I did change cables, bought a crappy Radio Shack one, and it solved the problem.

The "dusty record" sound could be attributed to a broken cable.   I don't know much about optical signals....could the fiber inside the cable become fractured in some way?

thanks

Thanks Bean.....but that would make this sport way to easy.   The broken cable was actually another SP cable.

I thought I somehow had switched on Grace's new "high pass phonograph filter"  ;D

I'll be ordering the one you suggested asap.

Why the recommendation of that particular cable, Bean?  Yeah it has right angle connectors, but it looks pretty flimsy.  I've got a monster optical cable (yeah I know, monster cables suck, but I had this one lying around) that's about 3x as thick as that cable...

this seems to be the only one that MANY of us have had good luck w/ thus far, and the real robust cables need adapters to go rt angle, which is shady at best, because NOONE makes a robust rt angle optical cable :'(

and its pretty cheap, only like 25-26 bux at most

skalinder actually is the OG of recomending this cable, and since then ive been a happy tapir!

Just wondering. ;)  I don't even use an RA adapter.  Haven't found a real need for it yet.
