If that was my budget I'd look at the Fuji Finepix s3000 or s5000.   I've read and seen many good things about them.  If you want something more compact I'd look at the Nikon coolpix line.

tigerdirect.com has a 5 megapixel "Gateway" camera for a $149 right now! If I had any extra cash I'd buy one. The URL for that particular deal is:

i used to have a canon point and shoot digital.  i think for the money, they are very good cameras.  canon's processing chips are very good.  in that price range, the canon powershot A85 and A95 look very good.  the A85 is just under $300.  the a95 is $379 at B&H.  you may be able to find the a95 within the $350 budget, but i haven't looked very hard. the a95 has 5 mpix, while the a85 is 4.  i think other than that the feature set is very similar.  25% extra resolution is pretty nice.  you can probably find the a95 close to $350 new from ebay with full warranty.

i meant to mention that dpreview.com has a good site for comparing.  you can enter the type of camera and features you are looking for and it compares models.  it only has in-depth reviews on the more advanced cameras, but it is a good source for info nonetheless.

this might not be true

I have found that i use my camera less that I would like to because it can be a real pain in the ass to carry around
she might really appreciate something that can easily fit in the front pocket
the show is over go home please.

My Canon A80 has proved effetive in multiple use.  I am a diehard Nikon fan ( I have a Nikon N80 SLR) so you can believe my Canon fluffs....
