Adobe gives away Adobe Audition 3
« on: January 06, 2013, 10:11:28 PM »
http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/creative-s uite-2-activation-end-life.html

Adobe have shut down the activation server for old products and they have posted links, and serial numbers, for activation-free versions which can be downloaded by anyone with an Adobe ID (which you can obtain on the spot).

If you follow the link given on that page, you will be asked to enter - or create - an Adobe ID. Then you will be taken to a page which gives download links and serial numbers to a slew of end-of-life Adobe software, including Adobe Audition 3, which while lacking the enhancements of later versions, includes stuff they didn't re-code for those versions.

You can also download the whole Creative Suite 2.

Worth having in your audio toolbox even if you use other programs normally.  The restoration stuff is still very good.

Thanks for posting!

has anyone ever used the creative cloud? Looks pretty interesting, but it would be nice if there was a pay as you go plan.

I do like Audition 3 for multitrack stuff. And some of the bundled plug-ins are more than acceptable.

Thanks for the link.

FWIW, I used v3.0 for awhile and went back to v1.5 because 3.0 seemed like a RAM hog and bogged my older machine down quite a bit (1.5ghz single core processor, 1.5gb of RAM).  Functionally, there were a few things that were nicer on v3.0, but I didn't perceive the essential functions of the two versions to have much difference...although I could be wrong about that since I'm not a power user.

Apparently, Adobe is NOT giving away copies of CS2 and they've caught their mistake.  Somebody's gonna get fired over this. > http://forums.adobe.com/message/4974662

They did give it away - and the terms of the accompanying licence allows installation without payment.  How they can now un-give it I don't know.  There are a lot of copies out there now and you can still download from direct links.

So now they probably won't kill the activation server and make any new activation in the last 48 hours invalid. Whatever they do will be in favor of adobe.

According to the Adobe page from the original link: Effective December 13, 2012, Adobe disabled the activation server for CS2 products and Acrobat 7. If you install Acrobat 7 or a CS2 application, the activation fails and returns the error, "Activation Server Unavailable."

Whatever Adobe finally decides to do, it'll be bloated.  ;D

Adobe rep on their forums -

"It appears the download server is now available. Our apologies for the inconvenience the outage of the download page may have caused."

Looks like they've decided to pretend that the whole thing never happened, and leave the cat out of the bag.

Thanks for the info.  I'll have to "deal with this" when I get home in the coming days as Audition 3.0 is still what I use on my laptop for mastering.  Does everything I need it to do and relatively well (save for dithering/downsampling).

I think the download page being down is a separate issue...

They just didnt want to continue to maintain the activation server for a product that came out in 2005.

I think its a smart move - essentially turning a legacy product into some free advertising...I don think its a mistake.

I'm a bit confused by the ealier messages in this thread because the thread title says v3.0 could be downloaded for free, but people are now discussing the CS2 version.  Are either/both V3.0 and CS2 available for download?

EDIT:  Answered question for myself.  V3.0 is the version of Audition that is packaged with the Suite of products, which is called Creative Suite...or CS2.

Just to be sure people know, v3.0 is a different release from the CS2 version.  CS2 is a later version than v3.0.

Seems like it - there is a whole bunch of stuff from this era on the download page. Photoshop CS2, Premiere Pro 2.0,  etc...

Thanks for the info!  Looks like at the least I can pick up a version of Photoshop/PS Elements that I might sometimes use.

In terms of Audition, does anyone know if the full CS2 Suite includes Audition, esp the Mac version?  I'm on a Mac, and there is no Mac version of Audition 3.0 for Mac, but there is a Mac version of the full CS2 suite.  As far as I can tell, Audition was part of the CS2 suite, and later dropped out of the CS suite as of the CS3 version, to be continued as a standalone product.  I don't know though when Audition was made available for Mac.

It would be cool if the CS2 suite for Mac included Audition, but I somehow doubt it.

I don't foresee needing Audition much, but I do need to transfer a bunch of DATs.  And back in those days when I recorded and listened to DAT directly, or transferred DAT>CDR via a standalone CD recorder, I pushed my levels since I wasn't doing any post normalization.  Grrr, made sense at the time, but now I have a lot of master DATs with low level clipping (1-3db of clipping, once fixed).  I used to use Cool Edit Pro, and it had a great clip restoration function.  It would be nice to use Audition, if only for that alone.

Todd:

It doesn't look like this answers your question directly, but maybe by deduction it does.  I'm obviously not sure how accurate this is, but the wiki gives a reasonable summary of the versions of Audition and when it went Mac.

Thanks guys, that's what I thought.

I have the clipfix.ny plugin that works in Audacity for clip restoration (can't get it to work in Amadeus Pro).  It works and does the job, but I can't highlight and process more than 5-10 minutes of music, or it just locks up.  Even then, it can take several minutes to do clip restoration on 5-10 minutes of music.  So clip restoration for a 3hr show can take an hour+ to accomplish, including a lot of handholding.

If you've installed Audtion 3.0 you might care to download the update patch - I used to know what it did, but whatever it was, it was worth having!

from the "details" link:

Changes in Adobe Audition 3.0.1:
• Spectral tools no longer crash machines with more than four CPU cores.
• The Graphic Phase Shifter effect has been reenabled.
• Performance while recording MIDI data has been improved.
• The Sequencer will now record MIDI data even if the panel is closed.
• Adobe Audition will now launch on Windows Vista® systems where the My Documents folder was moved from the default location.
• The application will now ignore Windows "Locale" settings to format decimal data in comma-delimited XML settings files.
• A Healing Brush crash issue has been addressed.
• Crossfades are no longer incorrectly added to grouped clips when overlapped with non-grouped clips.
• Invalid crossfades will no longer be added to the end of a previously trimmed clip after enabling or disabling looping.
• Invalid crossfades for clips after enabling non-session tempo-based looping have been addressed.
• Dragging crossfaded clips onto the master track no longer creates two additional tracks and an error in the crossfades.
• Inserting MIDI from the Files panel would cause the application to hang in Edit mode for an audio file whose sample rate didn't match the session.
• Several scenarios where crossfade changes could corrupt a session were addressed.
• Closing a session without exiting the rewire app no longer causes Adobe Audition to save a blank session.
• Undo no longer becomes disabled after undoing the creation of unique copies of two crossfaded clips.
• Crossfaded clips no longer disappear after undoing move clips.
• Canceling VST scan no longer causes Adobe Audition to become unstable.
• If a selection existed, a full session mixdown would only process MIDI data through the end of the selection.
• The Open MIDI dialog box was not completely modal and could cause a crash.
• MIDI Host had problems with some Spectrasonics VSTi instruments, where it wouldn't show the entire UI.
• CD burning would sometimes create a corrupted disk but still report a successful burn.
Applying the Clip/Pop Eliminator no longer crashes the application.
• Crash recovery is now more reliable when using Auto-Save For Recovery.
• When the application detects the possible saving failure that causes a corrupted session, a warning dialog box now appears so users can retry the save.
• Transport controls are no longer disabled if a new session is opened without closing the existing session.
• Crossfades will now retain their original shape when clips are moved and the session is reopened.

A corporation like Adobe never does anything to "help out customers."
Adobe took their money 7 years ago...and the bottom line on maintaining these increasingly obsolete activation servers was too high.
They have essentially become a nuisance. So - They probably want to decrease legacy maintenance/support costs - with the side effect of some free advertising.

Just a guess - but back in 2005 Apple/Mac may accounted for a lot of the CS2 users - particularly folks who used it professionally.
But, since Apple herds it's users to newer products. That CS2 demographic has probably decreased more quickly.
And Adobe knew people running new Macs wouldn't bother/benefit since apparently its not compatible with the more recent versions of OSX.

With XP facing a 2014 expiration date - Adobe may have seen a year window to advertise their products to a whole bunch of people who will be looking for new computers once Microsoft shuts off their XP update servers.

I think giving away CS2 isnt much of a big deal. GoLive? I kind of remember using that tool once upon a time. But Im sure few are seeking it out.

The media editors are a nice giveaway. Even if there is just one or two features in Audition, it's worth having.

I downloaded the two Photoshop products and Premier Pro 2.0.
I'll probably never use Photoshop - because I have other editors for XP that I prefer.
But sometimes these are worth installing just for the extra fonts.

I also have a malfunctioned Mac G4 and fresh OSX 10.4 DVD - and I'd like to revive that machine...some of this software would be perfect.

Perfectly stated and 100% agreement from me.  Adobe abandoned me way back in the old days when they made decisions not to grandfather Cool Edit Pro customers over into the early editions of Audition without significant upgrade fees.  Ever since then, I haven't felt too guilty using a cracked version of Audition 1.5, since I'd paid fully into CEPro.  At least now I can get a legit upgrade to 3.0 for free if I want it.  Nevertheless, Adobe proved when they abandoned me a long time ago that they're not driven all-that-much by the customer service angle.  This makes up for it a little bit (albeit 10 years late), because at least now I can get a free upgrade to what I'd paid alot of money for all those years ago.

I think it's a brilliant marketing ploy.  You know that many people who wouldn't have bought the product now got a free version to test, and a lot of them will end up buying the upgrades.

Thanks for posting the link
I haven't used Audition since v1.0, years ago.
For Audition 3.0 there are 3 files.
Are all 3 files needed, if so what order do you install them in.

Thanks for any help

Install the program first, then install the loops.  (The loop installer is the smallest file, the loops themselves are the biggest, and the basic program is the middle sized one).

Somewhere - There are some posts about how to correct for drift with Audacity - I think you have to do a little math, but might be preferable to stretch

For Audition 3.0 there are 3 files.
Are all 3 files needed, if so what order do you install them in.

You only need the main program installer:  ADBEAudition_ESD1_WWEFGJIS.exe.  No need to install the loopology component (exe) or the 4GB of loopology samples (7z)...unless you want to play around with, well, loops.

Thanks for the info, the main program now works fine, not planning on messing with loops so that part I left out.
Now I have to figure out were resample and dither are, Audition seems to have way more features then Sound Forge that came with the Sony PCM-M10

Using Audition or other software, what would be a good method to make some live music louder and keep it as natural sounding as possible. If I just normalize the track, it still does not have the volume that I would prefer. It has the sound, but I really have to crank the stereo for listening. Tried hard limiting low setting. It made it better. Would compression 2:1 be better then hard limiting ?

Compression at 2:1 is a lot to my ears.  I would try low level compression of about 1.25:1 to 1.33:1, applied at sounds above -9dbFS to -14dbFS.  Play around with settings around there, plus the attack and release settings.  I prefer attacks <20ms (and usually <10ms) and releases in the 40ms-100ms range, though I still keep playing around with those settings to see what I like best.

Compression of around 1.3:1 is pretty mild and sounds pretty natural, but is enough to get the levels louder and also to try to get average levels of the live music you record more consistent.  Compression is probably blasphemy to many here, but I remember reading many years back that Doug Oade applied mild compression for the music he distributed to the masses (again, the 1.3:1 level) -- though he kept the uncompressed for his own listening on his $40,000 playback system or whatever it is. I also find it nice when the music I record that is very similar (eg, jamband/rock/PA-driven electric, whatever you call it) has more consistent levels, since I do sometimes just put things on shuffle play when I'm out on the deck or listening while casually hanging with friends.

FYI I installed Audition 3.0.1 and now my cool edit pro 2.1 won't noise reduce more than 90 minutes of any one file at a time, even after uninstalling BOTH programs and then reinstalling cool edit pro 2.1

Hmm, might be worth seeing whether there's any fix for that on the AudioMasters site.

So just to be clear, Adobe Audition 3 does NOT run on win7, right?  Install on an XP machine only?
Now you see it:  ADK 51TL,  or MK4/41>KC5>CMC6, or AT4051b/4049a > Wendt X2 > R-09HR
Now you don't:   CA-14c  or DPA4061 > CA ST-9100 > R-09HR

AA3 has been running fine for me on Win7 x 64, for the last couple of years.

If you have 32 bit Windows 7, I think you are fine with just 3.00. AA3.01 has run perfectly for me on Windows 7 x 64. Everything works fine. When I only had AA3.00 installed, it worked for the most part, but there were many issues including that after burning a CD it froze the computer and I needed to reboot. Also I had a lot of problems using batch processing to create mp3's or ogg files to the point where I stopped trying to do that. There are other documented issues with AA3.00 and 64 bit systems as well.

I loaded this free offer of AA3  on a new PC over the weekend.  I also applied the patch, 3.01 and then registered my copy with Adobe.  Windows 7 x64 box.  No issues to report.  Adobe's giveaway is legit.

I installed it, but I've become so accustomed to Audacity that I'm not sure I want to learn a completely different workflow. It's not like I'm going to be applying to work for a studio anytime soon.

I just downloaded 3.0 and started to install it.  First thing it asked for was my name, and the serial #.  I looked at the config file, and it shows a serial #, but when I typed that in, both with and without the hyphens, it told me that wasn't a valid serial #.  Is there something I'm missing, or not doing properly?

The Serial Number to use is listed amongst the list of "affected titles" on the Adobe website page for all the discontinued CS2 products.
