I now suspect I had one channel of the 70d set on high and the other channel set on high plus.
Have assembled a DIY rycote based shockmount based on your posts here. So much easier on the mic bodies. Thanks very much.
Now let's see what else I can mess up.

That would explain it! The HIGH+ setting on the 70D is so much noisier than HIGH I would consider it almost useless unless you're doing some long-range reconnaissance.
Good luck with your Rycotes! I was skeptical at first but now I'll never go back.
