You could try a factory reset.

No dice. And now it's beeping at me. (Yes, I know I can turn that off.)

Well, dang. I don't use the backlight when I roll (I use the app), but if you need that function then it sounds like a repair or replace situation.

I don't desperately need it, as I mostly use the app. But it would be nice to be able to see things like settings, disk space remaining, etc., while doing setup before a show. Very strange.

And now the backlight has started working again, as mysteriously as it stopped. Mercury was in retrograde, maybe?

Next week, I'll record with my new Sony PCM-A10 for the first time. It will also be the first time that I'll have to check the levels, having only recorded in 32bit float so far. My setup will be this: SP-CMC-4U (4.7k mod) > 9V battery box > PCM-A10. I will record in audio-in mode and manual gain of course. It's an acoustic but amplified show in a venue for ca. 1000 people, I plan to be close to the stage/stacks.
For those who have experience in recording with the PCM-A10, which gain setting would you start the recording in? I think one can adjust the gain from 0-30.

Setup:
SP-CMC-4U-PHANTOM-48 (cards) > ZOOM F3
SP-CMC-4U (low sensitivity mod, cards) > SP-SPSB-20 12V > Sony PCM-A10
CA-14 (cards) > CA ugly battery box > Sony PCM-A10 [SOON]

Next week, I'll record with my new Sony PCM-A10 for the first time. It will also be the first time that I'll have to check the levels, having only recorded in 32bit float so far. My setup will be this: SP-CMC-8U (4.7k mod) > 9V battery box > PCM-A10. I will record in audio-in mode and manual gain of course. It's an acoustic but amplified show in a venue for ca. 1000 people, I plan to be close to the stage/stacks.

My usual setting for loud music (just on the verge of needing earplugs) with similar mics is 10 for omni caps and 14 for cards. "Acoustic but amplflied" you could probably push it a bit more.

Thanks again, nulldogmas! :)

I misremembered in my original post, I intended to write SP-CMC-4Us, but I guess it doesn't make a huge difference?

What's your usual MO, do you try to get your peaks around -12db with those settings?

4Us are precisely what I use.

Yep. And leave the limiter on just in case there's some huge squall of feedback or something that would otherwise clip, but that almost never comes up.

I would have left it turned off, but you're absolutely right. Thanks again :)

I'm in favor of limiters. If you don't get close it won't do anything, and if you go over it will probably save the signal quality.
I've mentioned this before but in my experience with A10, when using internal mics on PCM-A10 with limiter, level setting of 6 is correct. Lower will not have any advantages over a setting of 6.
With 24 bits, I see no need to go higher for amplified music.

Recorded with my new Sony PCM-A10 for the first time yesterday. I'll post how it went in my "first time stealth taping" thread as this is more about rookie mistakes than the recorder itself  :banging head:

Here's my post:

Oh and since we talked about the limiter, it was GOOD you guys told me to turn it on. The audience was very loud inbetween songs, much louder than the music before and after. So the limiter set in several times I think, but not during the music.
