Yes, I think they all output 16 bits. That's what I record in so it doesn't bother me. A lot of people mix down to 16 bits anyway. It is odd that it works that way but hey, it's free and works very well.

Thanks for all the recommendations!

I've tried UVR5 and it is fantastic! It splits into vocals, drums, bass and other and even outputs to 24bit audio.
It's probably something I could play around with endlessly only to never arrive at a final result, but it's good to know it exists when I absolutely need it.  :)

That is an excellent reason! I've run side by side comparisons of the CA-14 and CMC-4U and found them virtually indistinguishable — my one caution would be to go extra gentle on the CA-14s, as the wires are a bit fragile and can develop static. (There are folks on here who can repair them cheap if that happens, though.)

Good to know, thanks!

If I were doing this for real I would split the recording into stems, dump them all into Audacity, and then ride the faders until I got something I was happy with. (Or, equally often, not be able to figure out what I like best, and decide instead to go with the original version. I do that with EQ constantly as well.)

It's very encouraging to hear that this happens to more experienced folks than I am as well
Setup:
SP-CMC-4U-PHANTOM-48 (cards) > ZOOM F3
SP-CMC-4U (low sensitivity mod, cards) > SP-SPSB-20 12V > Sony PCM-A10
CA-14 (cards) > CA ugly battery box > Sony PCM-A10 [SOON]

Are you sure you got 24 bit audio out of UVR5?
If so, what settings and algorithm did you use?
Previously you could give it 24 bit input, but the output would be 16 bit.

Oops, I gave incorrect info earlier, got confused by nulldogma's first comment about the bit rate.

UVR5 can do 24 bit audio, but the only sampling rate it puts out is 44.1.  Since most people who record in 24 bit use 48 (or higher) sample rates, that's where the problem is.

Yeah, I found a statement from the company that they didn't have enough available data to be able to reconfigure the program to do 24/48.  Since 24/48 seems to be the most widely used taping setting, I'm calling bullshit on that one.
