Title: Iphone 7plus for recording?
Post by: in2blues on September 12, 2018, 04:35:23 PM
I am buying Iphone 7plus and am thinking I might use this to record. have a few questions

1. What is the best app to use for recording audio/video? Something easy and dependable
2. Will I be able to use my Church mics. to record AND if so would I need battery box?

Would mostly use for video but if going some place where not convenient to bring in deck would want to be able to record audio

Thanks,
My old cell is really old and trying to find out what the 7plus can do

Good questions. There is not a lot of info on this, so I had to do some research on my own to find out stuff that "works".  As for recording apps, I use the Shure MOTIV the most. It's laid out nicely and you can adjust the recording levels.

I have also used the NCH RecordPad app and it's very nice as well (I just like the Shure more for some reason). You can adjust the levels via it as well ...

Lastly, I have used the VERY DETAILED and incredible PVD Field Recorder app (I think it's available for iPhone as well). It's not as simplified as the above two, but it's VERY impressive for a recording app ...

I hope this helps!!
Let me know if I can help anymore.

I went out and bought the Shure MV88 Microphone and so far I like it. Haven't recorded a show yet but seems to work fine so far. It wouldn't connect with my case so I bought an otter case on sale and cut away so mic fits. The only problem is I don't believe that you can use app with any other microphones (like my church CA-11's). I tried plugging mics and using that little adapter thing that came with the phone but program wouldn't recognize the mics. Am I doing something wrong?
If this won't work with outside microphones is there an app that is free or cheap and easy to use that would work  with my Iphone 7plus?

Thanks for any help

I have a question about the shure MV88.

here is a sample i recorded this weekend.
https://soundcloud.com/jeffreytopping/13-vanity

Getting results i have not had before.
Is this clipping of the bass because the "Limiter" was on? Or due to "Compression" being set to "light"?
The sound was very loud, like chest thumping loud, and it seems it was too much for the mic, but is it due to the settings i had at the time? (see above)
ive actually had my levels too high before and had redline distortion but not this kind of muting of the bass after every kick drum or bass thump.
Can anyone give me some advice on how to fix this in the future?

thanks

I am not sure if the lightning to 1/8" adapter works at all for audio input but using the headset port on an iphone requires using a TRRS adapter. The connector has a third ring which tells the iphone that it will be used for audio in. In addition, this is mono only. If the adapter works at all it most likely requires a TRRS cable too

The general solutions for recording audio to an iphone are

1. Headset port with TRRS cable, mono only
2. Record using the built in microphone
3. Use a lightning connected microphone like the Shure Zoom IQ5/IQ6/IQ7
4. Use a lightning connected A/D connector like he Sonicport or DPA D:Vice (with DPA microphones)

As for #4 this modded zoom iq6 is another option https://www.studiocare.com/soundman-modified-zoom-iq6-interface-for-iphone-mobile-and-ipad.html

I've used the Rode IXYL with a lightning extension cable in the past and got great results from it.

This topic is a bit older, but still interesting to some, I guess.

I am using my iphone as an audio recording device too, with OKM mics. There are two devices available: Soundman modded the Zoom iQ6, took the capsules out and put a 3.5 Jack in. He sells them for 160€. Recently Rode released the SC6-L Lightning Connector with 2x TRRS input, for 3.5 Mics you need an additional cable to split the signal. Soundman offers these in bundle (also with mics), the Rode device alone is about 70-80€ (still cable needed). Both can be used with all external mics, either you need a small cable for one or the other occasion (splitting the 3.5 for Rode or combining for the 3.5 Jack of the zoom).

the Zoom device has a physical level control (Rock shows are suitable with Level 2-4), the Rode doesn't. The iOS App Voice Record Pro has all useful features for free including a Input Level Gain. (As read on the internet, the VRP App is not as useful for Android). You can combine the Zoom with VRP too.
Attention: you might come to conclusion, you would need the Rode Reporter App. Actually, with this app you can set up the 2 channels separately or combined, which is used by Voice Record Pro (VRP cannot combine channels itself, without Rode App it can only record separate channels) and a basic Input Level (Low, Medium, High) that will also be accepted by VRP. BUT: as long as you have the Rode on the phone and once made settings in it, it brings distortion to the recording (crackling that lies "above" the sound and is not on silent parts so actually NOT removable) when using the Rode device. Delete it from SETTINGS if you might have used it, then all settings are gone too and the recordings are clean again.

The Zoom is a bit thick to carry because of its capsule structure, that remains. I usually put it in a small back of throat drops. The Rode is very flat, the cable is a bit longer, but can be hidden quite well in flat back pockets of a small bag or something. I recorded loud rock shows without any batterybox/preamp and they are really nice, so that is not really needed.

Hope this info might help one or the other on here.

For video & photo I use Panasonic TZ (ZS) cams.
