I think that's the problem.  My argument is that listening to mp3's or wav's via the headphone out with a pair of headphones gives you a clear, coherant playback device, the headphone out is not audibly hissy, like the iRiver H120/H140 with a pair of iem's.

No its quite quiet listing to mp3. how ever when you put it into record mode and monitor your recording it is very noisey indeed. This is a problem with the RECORD monitoring section for some reason there is a different path in the circuitry for real time monitoring then there is for playback.
