XLR -> TRS not working
« on: Today at 12:33:47 AM »
I bought a set of these:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C1YJGDTR?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1

But my recorder with combo jacks does not recognize any signal from my mics.  Works fine on all jacks with straight xlr -> xlr.

Any speculation as to why?

I was under the impression that manufactures will avoid delivering P48 through TRS due to the risk of "shorting" when inserting the plug. What does the Tascam documentation say?
Roland R-07 -> FEL Communications Clippy EM172 Omnis or pair of RĂ˜DE Lavaliers.
iPhone 14 -> Shure MV88 or Sennheiser AMBEO Smart Headset

There is nothing in the manual indicating that it won't deliver P48 or any voltage through the TRS of the combi, but good idea, I never thought to check that.  Thanks.

Even though it is not in the manual, I guess even though I'm using balanced cables, phantom and TRS don't mix nicely sometimes and maybe Tascam disabled it by default but didn't mention it.  I'll stick with straight XLR for the mics, was just looking to save some cable when running from mixer boards with typically TRS outs or my mics and not have to carry another whole set around if I can't get a mixer feed and need to set up mics.

Phantom power travels down one of the Pins of an XLR connector and only supplied into that type of connector - so using a 1/4" connector - be it TS or TRS won't carry the Phantom Power - even in one of those jacks that allows you to plug in either a 1/4" or XLR - the ones that accept either. The device just doesn't supply it to anything but an XLR connector (note, you can make a TRS carry phantom power but no one does because when you plug or unplug the connector, the Tip passes by where the Shield makes contact once plugged in and where the Ring makes contact once plugged in and makes contact with those along the way, which would cause things we don't want).

I'll leave this thread up in case someone makes the same ignorant mistake.  Thanks for sending me down the right road.

I have an old good Tascam dr680 and it provides phantom via TSR. I am sure of this because I use it (channels 5 and 6 provides phantom and have only TSR connections, probably due to space). I think they have some kind of short circuit treatment when connecting the connectors.
