Title: My first taping!
Post by: sillydonut on February 16, 2004, 04:22:47 PM
Well, I popped my cherry. Used AT933's - SP-SPSB-3 - PCM-M1. Stealthed with a Kangol hat (sweet). Cat Power at the Knitting Factory in NYC.

Totally screwed up the levels, too hot. The sad thing is a bunch of the songs started out quietly, and the recordings sound stellar, I mean really gorgeous, and then it all turns to shit. I was totally paranoid about being busted, so I didn't pay close enough attention to my levels.

So a great lesson learned, and the promise of good things to come.

you'll get the hang of it! Many many shows have I f'ed up, the trick is just to do that less often the more you record ;)

Crap, that's what I should be shooting for?  I've been doing things all wrong :(

Congrats on the first tape.  As they say, you must make bad tapes to make good tapes.  Sucks for those bad tapes to be on a show that you really wanted.  Definitely practice/experiment with local acts.  Much better than only pulling out your rig when a good act is in town, only to fudge it up.

Yeah, goodness know I've taped some crap in order to get used to running my gear...  Now my first real tape gets run this upcoming weekend - or one that I'm nervous about:  Peter Rowan and Tony Rice at our local watering hole...  I'm thinking that all the practice will pay off though...

Get thee close to the sound source, waaaaay up front and center.  They will *not* crank the PA for Tony and Peter, guaranteed.

I've never heard a bluegrass show NOT run in mono, so if you can't get a good location (which is relative, of course, given the layout, obnoxious crowd factor on the given night, etc.), consider stack taping that sucker.  If it's a local place and you're familiar with the joint, I'm betting you can get a good location, though.  Good luck!

Hmmm...  Yeah, location will be hard that night, you see, the bar owner just built us a tapersection next to the SBD...  He probably won't let us tape outside of it...

I'm hoping that the crowd ends up being a real B-Grass crowd not the typical college crowd...  The $28 ticket price will keep the kiddies out though...
