Title: 4.7K mod not possible….what now? Attenuator Cable?
Post by: down2earthlandscaper on April 16, 2016, 04:14:01 AM
Ok, I have a pair of Countryman B2D's (Thanks Jamos):) that were terminated to Lemo connectors. I had them rewired to a stereo mini plug. The original plan was to do the 4.7k mod during this process, however when we got into the mics it was discovered that they are "2 wire" mics, and therefore the 4.7k mod is not possible? I'm wondering what the best alternative is? Would an attenuator cable between the mics and the recorder be a solution for high SPL situations? Or just powering them with my CA9100? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
(I will have a chance to give them a test run tonight at moe. I'm going to run them straight into the Sony M10 "mic in" jack and see how they do with just "plug in power")

The 4.7k mod is specifically for "2-wire" mics; 3-wire or phantom powered mics don't need it. You should PM darktrain

Hmmm. Maybe I got the terminology wrong.
I went back to the pm - Here is the message I got regarding the Mics (from one of our "community cablers"):

"ok, getting into the b2's, these are only 2 conductor mics, so I can put a mini plug on them but there is no way to put the sensitivity mod on a 2 wire/conductor mic"

Isn't the mod normally done on B3s or are they already low sens like the 4061s?  Not sure I've ever seen anyone run B2Ds?

I know there are B3's out there that have been modded.

These B2D's come in three sensitivity levels. Mine are the W5 (middle sensitivity):

(pasted from Countryman website)

FREQUENCY RESPONSE:
50 Hz to 18 kHz
CABLE BREAK STRENGTH   > 45 lbs
WEIGHT:   0.07 oz (2 grams)
SENSITIVITY:
W4 (no band): 6.0 mV/Pascal
W5 (red band): 2.0 mV/Pascal
W6 (blue band): 0.6 mV/Pascal
EQUIVALENT ACOUSTIC NOISE:
W4: 34 dBA
W5: 39 dBA
W6: 44 dBA
OVERLOAD SOUND LEVEL:
W4: 120 dB SPL
W5: 130 dBA SPL
W6: 140 dBA SPL
CABLE LENGTH:
5 Feet

I don't really know anything about the 4.7 k mod, but I can say that you almost certainly won't need an attenuator.  Those mics are quite low sensitivity, compared to most "taper" mics; if anything, you might have trouble getting enough gain (they'll output ~ 10 dBu less than 4061s at the same SPL).
