Schoeps Cap Dunked in Water - Help
« on: May 23, 2023, 09:00:45 PM »
Just what it says, cap fell in some water. Just tried it on the active cable, nothing. Is this dead? Or just wait to dry out/silica packets? Help!

Just dry it out and hope for the best.  Once dry try again.

Very gentle heat - like from a lightbulb - will help it dry. Don't put power to it again until it's had plenty of time to dry. Like a week.

Just going to place it in some silica packets and try again in a week. I’ll report my findings.

Absolutely gutted.

the rice in a bag trick does work at times. I have recovered a phone and a thermometer that way.

Was it a loose capsule only? How long was it in water? Clean water? Omni or directional?

Omnis are usually sealed reasonably well front and back, but may have a small air vent. B&K once showed 4006 mics stirring a glass of water. Directional will have several acoustic vents in the back allowing more water in.

All you can do is try to gently dry it. I have doubts about rice, but warmth and silica dessicant should be fine. I might gently shake it occasionally while drying. At worse, you'll have to send it in for disassembly, drying and cleaning, especially if the water wasn't clean. That might really be best anyway, even clean water could cause some corrosion or leave deposits.

I've disassemble Rode NT5 and Neumann KM84 capsules, and they aren't that complicated.

It was attached to the active cable. I swapped the cap to that side and it works fine. It was probably in the water for no more than 2 seconds. But submerged. Clean.

Schoeps MK4 capsule.

Still thinking about it all day today and am very bummed out as I have a lot of shows coming up.

I had a vintage AKG ck1 capsule that rolled along the kitchen counter and into the sink landing in a bowl full of water. Snatched it out immediately but it got submerged briefly. I left it on a towel with a reading lamp bulb over it and a fan blowing on it for about a week. Powered up fine and worked as it should.

Later when I had to send an omni capsule to Richard Land for a rebuild I sent along the ck1 for a checkup. It performed to spec and didn't need to be cleaned or adjusted in any way according to him.

Don't give up hope. It may be just fine. It's not great that it had power applied to it before it was dry but it may not have shorted anything out.

Since it's cardioid, there should be several rear vent holes and probably a shaped backplate, with lots of little nooks and crannies to hold water. I would still try to dry as indicated and shake it occasionally. Good luck.

Contact Schoeps. They have super-friendly customer service and can answer this probably more competently than anyone around here (except for DSatz, of course). ;)

I would consider using the sun to make sure the innards are dry. I have had good luck with some random electrical items that got wet. Nice gentle heat that will ensure some evaporation.... Good luck!

Offering hope with my recent experience.

Taped on Saturday.  Myself and the other taper (same stand) got caught in heavy rain.  Powered the decks down, packed up in a complete downpour... drenched microphones.  His MK41vs and actives are fine.  I waited until just now to fire up my 853 subcards and adapters and they are running fine.

I have faith.  Let them dry for several days.

My feelings are hurt!  :D     (although I certainly would defer to dsatz in these instances!)

I couldn't wait any longer... It's been a few days. Being out in the sun for 20 minutes during the evening and just sitting in silica gel packets. I powered it on with the active cables. It does work. However, there is no low end and way less sensitive than the other capsule. I am not sure if drying it out more/giving it time will really do anything. I have sent an email to Schoeps. But I'd love to be wrong and just know there may be still a bit of moisture inside. The next few weekends are my busiest of the summer in terms of shows.

I'm not sure I would be applying power to wet (or still potentially wet) electronics.

Perhaps you can find some gear to borrow?
