Audio Technica: AT4021 vs AT3031
« on: October 14, 2019, 05:30:54 PM »
Here's a cool article I found today.  I used to own the AT3031's.  Still luv'em.  Best bang-for-your buck microphone of all time, imo.  Good read.  Answers my question on both two mics.

I've never used either of them, but I do love the AT4031.

Audio-Technica make great mics across the board, IMO.  I'm surprised they don't get more respect among tapers...it seems like many people look at them as "budget" or "beginner" mics.
Mics: AT4050ST | AT4031 | AT853 (C/SC) | Line Audio CM3 | Sennheiser e614 | Sennheiser MKE2 | DPA 4061 Pre: CA9200 Decks: Zoom F8 | Roland R-05

Yup.  The same can be said about Japanese mics in general.  It's too bad.  I own Nakamichi's and Audio Technica's.   I made lot of great recordings with them.   But most folks want the glamorous studio mics made by the Germans/Austrians.  I totally understand it, for Schoeps, AKG, and Neumann have been doing longer and more successfully, but.........

Here's the freq charts for all 3:  AT3031, AT4031, AT4021

All three share the same capsule.  Audio Technica, however, scrubbed all history of the AT4031 from its website.  I scored its freq chart (middle one in red) from recordinghacks.  Interesting.

Not that I doubt you, but I'm curious how you found out they all share the same capsule?

I really like my two AT3031.
Small, cheap and great sound.
I understand that AT thought they perhaps were too good and modelled them into the 40-series.
