Title: What is wrong with my rig? (I found out!)
Post by: Aaron41 on July 27, 2006, 01:23:09 PM
Hey everyone,

Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this. I looked and saw that other threads like this are located here for hopefully it's the right one.

I've been botching the last few tapes I've been making. The sound on my DPA 4061 > SP bat box > IRiver is starting to distort badly. I've never had that problem before and can't figure out what would have caused it.

Here is a sample of what is happening. This is the 1 MB FLAC file. I've attached an MP3 copy too.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/nw3xa2

It seems that bass is distorting badly. I don't think it is the mics being overloaded since the 4061s don't seem to have that problem very often. The problem is showing up in both channels so I don't think it has anything to do with the mics. Could it be the bat box? Is this what happens to the sound when the battery starts running out? Could one of my connectors (either the miniplug on the 4061 or the bat box to IRiver connector) be causing this?

I tried testing the setup in the car after the show and couldn't reproduce any of the distorted bass. Then again, my car doesn't get nearly as loud as a concert.

I've got a show tonight and I'm REALLY hoping to get this all worked out before the night. Any help is EXTREMELY appreciated. Thanks a lot everyone for your time.

I'd def. start by putting a fresh battery in the batt box.  How many shows does the batt. in the batt. box have under its belt?

I'm not sure actually. More than a handful.

I did the tongue battery test (probably stupid but oh well) and it only gave me a slight sting. Barely noticable. Is it supposed to knock me on my ass?

A fresh battery won't knock you on your ass but it will be much more than hardly noticable.

Try the yelling test before and after the battery swap to verify that is the true problem.. Also go for the tongue test on the new battery.  Normally these batteries last a year or more.  But I'm not sure if that is true if your mics are left plugged in.

I just did some more testing with a concert DVD. Left both mics up to the left speaker in my setup. When plugged in the battery box the levels were coming off a little bit. The right channel was louder than the left by a few dbs. This shouldn't be since it is a mono speaker. The sound clip came out ok but with little to no bass in it.

I tried with just the 4061s into the IRiver. This is said to give enough power for the 4061s but I'd rather not risk it during most shows. The levels were even and the sound clip it produced had bass in it.

Looks like it is just a battery issue hopefully.

Do you have a nearby smoke detector you could plunder?

lol. Yes I do. I might just run over to Kmart though.

Yeah, I've always been under the impression that they'll last for > 100hrs... but I too have had them die much quicker than that, and it had a bunch of crackle sound on the recording.

Aaron, let us know what happens, and feel free to borrow the 4060->MMA6K if you want.

Your sample has asymmetrical clipping on it.  I have had this on a few tapes and never really figured out the cause.

It looks like it was the battery that was giving me issues. No problems with the show I taped tonight.
