Schoeps UMS 20 shocks & stand question
« on: September 13, 2023, 10:23:40 AM »
Hi friends, I ask putting together a rig after a 30-year hiatus.  Looking forward to getting back out there!

I have a Schoeps UMS 20 stereo bar.  Planning to run CMC6’s with MK4 capsules, ORTF.

Does anyone have suggestions for a mic stand?  Also, what are the preferred shock mounts these days?  Do I need 3 shock mounts—one for each mic + one for the stand?  At least initially, I probably won’t do much stealth…not at least until I get my sea legs back!

Thanks in advance—

Dan O

Get a pair of Rycote INV-7 with the standard 72-shore Lyres. They are the correct compliance for your mics, and they will never wear out.

You'll need a riser to vertically offset one of the mics to cross them for ORTF. You can make your own from the 3/8"-5/8" adapters that come with the INV mounts if you insert a female 3/8" to male 5/8" adapter at the bottom.

You don't need to shockmount the bar, but a lot of classical recording engineers like to isolate the stand feet. You only really need this if your stand is going to be on a floor that transmits a lot of vibration, such as a wood stage.

Stand - unless you need something with a small footprint, go for this. You may not need the full height all the time, but it's nice to have it.

Depending on how and where you are using it you may not need to shockmount your mics at all using that bar. I used the Vark delrin version of the same bar and ran my Schoeps actives in the SGC mini clips and used a Schoeps A20 to mount the bar. This one point of suspension was enough for me but it really depends on your use case. If you are using a stand on a concrete floor with protection from people bumping into it the one shock may be sufficient. If you are clamping to a rail that people could be banging on or running a stand on a bouncy wooden floor that may be the source of vibrational noise then shockmounting the individual mics is for sure the way to go. I didn't have to resort to individual shockmounts for the 3 years I ran the Schoeps actives.

For 20mm mics my favorites were always the A20 or knockoff versions that were far cheaper.

The Rycote suspensions are effective and durable but I think they are overkill for what many tapers do and I'm not a big fan of their form factor. Lots of people are using them so you will probably hear more testimonials than just Volt's.

I use this stand - https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1074706-REG/photek_ls_8122_3_section_10_folding_light.html - but I just realized when copying the address that B&H has it listed as no longer available. If you can find it or a similar one I cannot recommend it highly enough. Very versatile and collapses down to less than 30" due to the reverse folding legs. Goes up to 10ft if you use the leg extenders. Smart design. I love mine. Only drawback is the permanent 1/4 mount on top.

Welcome back and happy taping!
