Title: Trying out some new gear, looking for suggestions. AKG 483, V3, Busman DR-680
Post by: yltfan on December 02, 2014, 02:37:30 PM
Tonight, I plan to run my trusty AT 4051 cards, the new AKG 483's, and the new Busman mod DR-680. I'm also going to put some beater mics on stage and get a board feed. Total overkill, I know, but it's partly about checking out the new gear, figuring out what I like (also want to get good tapes, as it's a band I like--Thee Oh Sees)

I'm sure whatever I end up running will come out pretty nice, as it's a small room, and I will be in the sweet spot, but if anyone has advice on which mics should go straight into the DR-680 (all six analog inputs are modded), and which should go thru the V3 to the unmodded digital in, I'd love to hear your opinions. Same with mic patterns. I'd probably go ORTF with the cards, PAS with the hypers.

Thanks!

I wouldn't use ORTF if the mics aren't onstage. My suspicion is you'll get more mileage out of the AT's into the V3, but I don't really know.

I agree with AJ! 4051s>v3 and 483>680. I ran 481/3>v3 way back in the day, and often, the highend was a bit fatiguing IMO! I've liked most every 480>680 tapes I've heard though ;)

hmm, I can't get enough highend frequencies with my AKG ck61 (either Naiant or 460) ~> V2 ~> DR-680.  Lately, I always got to bump it up.

Thee Oh Sees are a tough taping job.   I finally got them right after a half-dozen tries because the house FOH at Bowery is a magician and I was off the floor:

I seriously would reconsider doing on-stage for TOS, as your mics might very well get damaged.  Also, guard against serious spikes in the board feed from Dwyer swallowing the vocal mic and screaming.  I hate limiters and compression, but the board feed being compressed helped a lot in the Bowery situation.

It could've been my playback system back then too. Its true that everyones ears and playback are different though ;)

I've taped them a bunch as well. so I had it dialed in pretty good. The onstage mics I use are cheap 3031's (sometimes c1000, aka the tanks), both of which seem to be able to handle some abuse. Last night, they did fine for the first show, but they ended up pointing sideways for the second show--but no damage. We'll see how useful that part of the tape is. In terms of the board feed, I've had a few spikes, but nothing that caused any real problems--maybe because I always run pretty conservative.

Great show, as always, but this new lineup is a little disappointing.
