Title: New, smaller version of Schoeps shotgun microphone
Post by: DSatz on November 19, 2016, 04:02:24 PM
Hi. Schoeps has recently introduced a smaller (by about 40% in overall length), lighter (by about 20%), less expensive (by about 10%) version of its CMIT 5 shotgun microphone, called the "MiniCMIT". Its power consumption is also lower than that of the CMIT 5 by nearly half, and it can tolerate a wider range of powering voltages, although its dynamic range is best at 48 Volts.

In general the new model has the same sonic characteristics as the original--as it should, since it uses the identical capsule with an identical interference tube in front of it. However, the main way they made the microphone smaller and less expensive was by eliminating any switches on its body. So there's no way, unfortunately, to turn off its steep, built-in 70 Hz low-cut filter.

As a result, people here who record music and want a very high-quality shotgun microphone as the "M" microphone for M/S recording might well prefer the original CMIT 5. And those are becoming somewhat more readily available on the used market these days, as the word of the new model gets out, and some boom operators for film and video are switching over to the new, smaller version (which is easier to keep out of the camera frame when working in rooms with low ceilings).

Looks pretty cool, thanks for the heads up :)

It would be really interesting if they released JUST the CMIT5 capsule, so that you could use it with actives, like every other newer Collette series capsule! That said, the Mini CMIT is really small on its own and kind of nice to have an XLR with such a small mic overall! But releasing a Mini CMIT Capsule to use with actives and CMC 4/5/6 bodies would be even cooler than this IMO ;D But this could do AMAZING in shitty/boomy rooms and already is pretty damn small! I can't wait to hear what it can do with music, even though it has that Fixed 70hz low-cut!

Really? I can believe that a boomop would definitely go for lighter weight. But what creditable boomop is using a shotgun close to a reflective ceiling? The resulting comb filtering artifacts would drive post mad, and probably result in boomop replacement. Which is why just about any experienced boomop uses a hyper instead of a shotgun when working up against reflective surfaces like walls and ceilings. Interference tubes and rapid reflections (from whatever source, not just walls/ceilings) are just a bad combination.

I don't do that kind of recording, but everything you say certainly makes sense from a theoretical standpoint.

It's actually only a few inches shorter than the original CMIT 5. But perhaps the point is that when you're struggling to keep the microphone JUST above the frame while aiming it at the talent, the shorter the mike is, the less likely you are to bump into the ceiling, light fixtures, etc. while moving the boom, I dunno.
