Title: DIN and cardiods
Post by: creekfreak on April 28, 2003, 09:16:35 PM
Tried using DIN with my mk4's this weekend. Got real nice results. Still got that nice stereo image and wide soundstage, but the 90 angle tightened everything up nicely. Ever try DIN with your cards? Try it, it sounds nice. Starting to like this config for everything, my mk41's and mk4's.

I run DIN hypers from the section almost exclusively with my TL's.

I usually run my cards and hypers both using DIN config.  Usually space the caps (cards 8in. & hypers 17cm.)

Nice effect.  Seems to give me a much fuller image over XY.  Although I usually take the room into consideration.  I can say, I rarely ever take the angle above 90 degrees with the 481/3 combo.

FWIW, Are you running actives or straight to the mic amps?

Straight into the mic amps. Also, let me clarify, I ran DIN using 17cm with the cards just to see what it sounded like, and it came out nice. Tight, much warmer than the mk41's, but still had a nice soundstage and stereo image.

ive been using DIN for quite some time now w/ my 481's and LOVE it....i also use a mod. ORTF and dig that...i totally pheel the "more focus" quote a couple threads above and have been using a weird spacing to mix soundstage and tightness...  ;D

Thats what I love about taping, experimenting, there are so many ways you can run your mics that aren't even listed but still pull great tapes. I like things to be tight, but to soo focused that I lose that spacious 3d image.

I've gone to DIN as my default config the last 6 months or so.  If I'm well FOB or in a really good sounding room, I'll go ORTF.  I've had similar experiences: DIN produces a nice stereo image and wide soundstage and tightens things up nicely.

FWIW, I run 20cm/90º.  As others have stated here, some folks run 17cm/90º.  Either way, I think it's great!

completely agreed, I've been using the "mod" ORTF with my 481's and love it, going to give DIN a shot in a few days

I've been listening to alot of tapes so far. I'm fond of the V2 after the 481's.......haven't heard any shows with a V3 after. I'm also wanting to hear a 481 > V2/V3 > AD2k+

yeah, I'm a dreamer

Anyone have a used V2 they need to unload........??

 ;)

But hey, the more I just get used to my mics, the more my taste for them will improve and change.  Who knows, I might end up trying to get ahold of a mv-100, it's just one of those things. as long as you have a passion for what you do, everything will be fine

The best 481 tapes I made were ps2>modsbm-1.  In fact I have that modSBM-1 for sale :)

Yeah, I need to pic up a PS-2 to stop using all the power from my laptop

How much of a difference can you hear between a setup with a PS-2 and without a PS-2?

I ran ps-2 > ad500e for a while.  The ps-2 is very quiet and you prolly wouldn't notice any difference at all.  FWIW, some of the cleanest tapes I have pulled were using theis phantom-a/d setup.

Has anyone tried messing with the angle any for DIN using cards? I was thinking of moving them a little to 80-85 degrees for when I was a little farther back. Good, bad, just give it a whirl and see what happens? Thanks.

Give it a whirl and see what happens.  In my experience, tightening the angle can help in poor rooms or farther back, but once you get down around 70º or so (ballpark here) you start to lose the nice stereo image and soundstage.

And you have to be careful, too, because the more you tighten it, the more possible cancellations you can get between your card caps (unless you run hypers, of course)...  And you'll get "holes" or weird phasey problems indoors.

I'm all over DIN.  The best, the BEST way to run MG M300's, IMO...!
