Title: Nak300 setups.

I've been running Nak 300's for about 7 months now. No Pre, straight to D8 (hey, I'm broke!). I've been experimenting with placement of mics the whole time, and I've found the following to be true:

A/B : Very nice. stereo effect varies greatly depending on spacing. Nice low end, high end.. .

ORTF: I've run ORTF once, going to again tonight... but it was REALLY nice sounding. Low end pretty clear as was the high, altho a little distant sounding. Stereo effect very realistic, etc..

X/Y: BOOMY BASS. Doesn't seem to matter what type of music. I've run X/Y on all types, loud rock, mellow stuff, etc.. BOOMY. High end a little distant sounding as well.. I haven tried X/Y w/the bass rolloff yet.. don't know that I will unless I tape something I don't care about! hehe.

NOS: Have yet to try this....


I was curious if anyone else has had similar experiences with the NAK's. I should mention I run em w/CP-1 caps. I have to try a spaced omni setup... since I'm on a Shure A27m mount, I can't really get a GREAT deal of spacing....


I'm still looking into Pre's... thinking MP2, V2, V3...... anyone run these with da Naks?

Jim-
We ran some Nak 700s>v3 at Panic at Red Rocks and were surpised with the great results from that.  
Mic positioning does make a difference in the result, as you noted.  Have you tried the DIN setup? > http://www.dpamicrophones.com/eng_pub/MicUni/124.html
DIN and ORTF are the most common mic placements.

As for the boominess you found in XY, having a pre-amp or setting on the mic with a high-pass filter (rolloff) will give you some options for controlling your recording.

Granted the Naks don't have the same technology some of the newer mics do, the v3 with the Naks gave some results very close to the AKG 481s from the same stand.
After all, the Naks are the classics!

Tim, the CP-1's are cards.

Phil, I'll have to try DIN.. I'm probably going to run ORTF again tonight. Mebby DIN tomorrow night...
If I run X/Y again I'll definetly use the bass rolloff and see what it sounds like..

I sooo need a pre!!! anyone wanna donate one? hehehe

You could simply add a couple line transformers between your mics and D8.  Total cost:  ~$40.  That should kick up your levels enough to get you line-in on the D8, which should improve your sound significantly, IMO.  Search the Archival Section for a couple different common brand/models of line transformers.

You think that'd be better than the crappy pre ont he D8??

I know Shure makes some line transformers... cascade media should have them..... (they're even local for me! ).

Line transformers > D8 line-in will definitely sound better than the D8 pre.
