Does anybody know if the two mics are identical or is the B&K considered a superior mic? Someone with a lot of freakin' B&K test gear (in the $250K neighborhood) I know says that DPA gear is not the same as its B&K predecessors. Anybody have any knowledge of this statement? I almost considered it to be the truth until he said DPA 4011's are junk.

who knows? very little history is available of these mics.
maybe the bk 4011's had point-2-point, burned hole through hole no frills circuitry, higher polarization voltage? better caps?no surface mount stuff?
so again who knows???

B&K clearly sounds better. Just say it... Beeeeeinkay sounds cool. Deeeypeeeyay sounds dorky.

Same mic, same company, no difference.
DPA was a part of B&K and spun off a couple of years ago as a separate company. Different markets, different approaches but same quality. They still cooperate a lot, to the extent that a lot of things labeled DPA are made my B&K. Just one example, the 4003/4006y capsules are marked B&K.
The 4011 is discontinued though, superceded by the 4011-TL which is transformerless. You make your pick there.

I had not heard that DPA was a spin-off of B&K. My friend who owns the crappy DPA 4011's has the opportunity to have them upgraded to the transformerless design. I told him him his mics sound pretty good the way they are and that he should wait for some sort of opinion to emerge on the new design.

I'll gladly take those crappy 4011s off your friend's hands...

Current DPA 4xxx series uses BK capsules. DPA 2xxx series uses DPA capsules and are half the price.
