Topic: Best Software for merging and /or matrixing wav files?

There isn't really a "best", just personal preference:  Samplitude (various flavors, I use SE, $50), WaveLab, Sound Forge, Spark, Cakewalk, Reaper, Audacity (free), and plenty of others I can't think of off the top of my head.  Some, but nowhere near all, are referenced here:  http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,62294.0.html

You're going to want software that allows for time-scaling of files if you're going to be mixing disparate sources from different recorders that were not clock-synced during the recording process.

I'm not sure which of the above do that, but it is a vital consideration unless ALL the sources you want to mix together from a particular performance were actually clock-synced at the show.  The multiple cut and paste method folks use in wavelab, etc. just sounds like crap IMO because too often there is readily audible drift at the end of each track before one source is again cut and re-aligned with the other.

i use samplitude for 4 and 6 channel mixes and love it - you can download the demo version to test it out to see how you like it

FYI Brian the 50 for the SE version is actually Euro not USD so it ends up being closer to $80 but still well well worth it

Hmmmm...they've changed their pricing, then.  They used to have a hard-to-find link that listed USD$50, in addition to EUR50.  Can't find it know, though.  Anyway, agreed...still well worth it.

I purchased the LE version of Samplitude a couple of months ago, and it was definitely $50 (and not 50 euro).  As Brian says, the easy to find purchase page lists it as 50 euro, but there is another USA page that will sell you the software for $50.  I'll post it if I can dig it up.

Track based

You "draw" out the track for each wav you import into the program and thus can line up the waveforms to sync the audio.

I suggest doing it on a track by track basis unless you are using 2 sources from identical recorders to avoid "echoing"

You can contact Orange Audio - the US distrubutor of Samplitude and ask about SE pricing.  I think the current SE verison is still v9. The other pricier packages are v10.

I just spent about 20 minutes looking around the web and the Samplitude/Magix websites, and I couldn't find the link for $50 either, only 50 euro.  It's too bad, but even so, I agree that it's still worth the relatively cheap cost.  It's a great piece of software.

And yes, the current SE version is v9, while the straight-up version is v10.

Had the same questions a few weeks back and now I'm always using Foobar for such an operation!
