One thing to note, the links are hard wired between the capsule housing, and the bodies. I personally would go for the VM44 Classic with card and supercard capsules. That setup runs around 3K for a pair at Full Compass.

I thought they disconnected on the body end based on pictures on milab's site. Looks almost like a 5 pin lemo connection.

Not sure about that, but I know the connection to the capsule end is definately hard wired like the DPA 4022. My buddy Matt has a set but I didn't look at the bodies closely. I just like having balanced wire connecting everything, which is why I prefer the VM44 Classic.

The other capsules run $500-$600 each, so I hope these are going to be similarly priced.

Yes, I concur. Reminds me of the Schoeps KC5 cables in that regard, connector and cable are one.

The cable is hard-wired into the active head on the vm44-link cables.  These are removable capsules though, unlike the DPA402x series, so you can unscrew the capsule (eg, cardioid) from the active head and replace it with an omni or hyper cap.  Meaning, all you need is one set of bodies+active cables, then as many capsule options you'd like.

The active cables though hard-wired at the active head/capsule side can disconnect from the bodies. The connector isn't like any I've seen before.  Definitely not the normal lemo connection, but I have no idea who makes the connector.

I think whether you wanted the vm44-link mics or the vm44 classic is just a matter of personal preference on using full bodies vs active cable mics.  Same deal either way, unscrew one capsule and replace it with another.

Edit:  Also, I believe the vm44-link is balanced.  I've never seen the circuit schematic published or dug that deeply inside, but iirc the connector is a 5-wire connector (or at least is 5 pins, not sure if all are attached).  Also, I'm pretty sure the links use belden 1804a cable, which is 4 conductors plus shield.  That indicates to me it is a balanced approach, not unbalanced.

If the link cable is balanced, then Milabs win for best low profile setup in my book, especially for the price.

I don't stealth or otherwise need the links myself, and ever since holding a set of VM44 classics in my hand that a friend bought last year, I have had it in mind should I ever get another set of mics. I have always hoped for a hyper/super card capsule being offered, which they now have.

Thanks for all the positive feedback.

Our US distributor tells me that the new capsule is in their system, which means your Milab dealer should be able to get pricing info by now.
