New Cap for the summer
« on: March 17, 2004, 10:52:26 AM »
Ok, currently I have a set of mk41's and mk4's. Love the mk41's, kinda of iffy on the mk4's. Thinking of trying something new this summer for outdoor taping, looking at the mk21, and then the mk2/3's, so subcards or omni's. What would fit me best of outdoor taping? I have heard some sweet mk21 recordings, and the omni I know when used correctly sound fantastic also......can't decide, will probably look to trade someone some mk4's for the other.

yea, I was thinking the omni's would be fun, but I was also thinking subcards for instances where a wider pick up would sound nice, but not as wide as say an omni would give you. I have never run split omni's and would love to see what that sounds like.

go with the 21's...subcards own...omnis are great, but i think the times you'll able to be centered and split them enough to generate a great omni tape will be limited...get yourself the 21's and the 30cm kwonbar and you'll be good to go in a lot more circumstances.

I can't offer any experience with the mk2/2s/2h as I haven't had a chance to run them.  However, I do have some really nice omni tapes.  That said, I counldn't be happier with the mk21's.  They have given me all the natural full sound that I expect from an omni, but they are forgiving enough to run indoors fob.  Onstage is where I think they truly shine.  I have only compared them to onstage mk4 sources, but its pretty remarkable how much presence they can offer.  I discussed the mk21's with Peter Costello before I bought mine.  He does sound work for many bands and has the opportunity to put mics onstage for the likes of RWTC and others.  He mentioned that he had compared onstage results with tlm170s on many occasions and he was so convinced, he didn't even bother with the neumanns anymore.  Granted, this is all a very personal opinion, but it still meant alot to me.

I have only made one really bad tape with the 21's...  it was indoors in an old theatre, way fob, for a Mule show.  Turned out entirely too bass heavy.  If I really cared, I could have done some work in the post to fix it, but there were a few other card sources that sounded really nice, so there just wasn't a need.

The other reason I really like the 21's is b/c they are very convenient and easy to use if you have a NOS kwonbar.  No problem clamping that arrangement on any stand and its still semi-low pro.  Convenience means a whole bunch to me these days!

FYI: there was a guy looking for a pair of mk4's to go with his cmc6's.  If you jump on it, you may be able to hook him up.  You still have some time to get on it before the price increase.  If you wait, it'll cost you at least $130

Are they selling the '2s' or the 2's?  Its pretty tricky when it comes to writing lineages.  The 2s have a slight HF boost to compensate for proximity effect.

while that may be right, i would've thought that the "h" and "s" were the first initial of german words rather than english words.

MK2 = flat
MK2H = mild HF boost
MK2S = more pronounced HF boost

I have some MK2H's I'm going to try out this summer.  ;D

I would go witj the 21's they are a much better all around mic.  The omnis can be very chatty, where as the 21's when used right produce some of the most natural sounding tapes I've ever heard.  They are also great for small clubs or on stage, stage lip, where as the omnis are too chatty for these aplications, IMHO.
