Clicks in recording with SF6.0
« on: March 17, 2004, 01:59:59 PM »
I thought I read something here about mysterious clicks in the recording but my searches came up empty.
So, I use AKG>warm UA5 (Oade) >laptop via USB and SoundForge6.0. Sometimes I get these clicks here and there. Sometimes I dont. They're not loud. CDWAve doesnt even show them as a peak or anything. But they're there, lurking. I've listened through CDWAve, WinAmp, Media Player, burned cds and played them on the home deck and the clicks are there.  It's probably a Windows setting about HDs or some buried switch box somewhere.
If anyone knows what's up here, I appreciate it.
Even better would be the killer link to the Linux page with an OS and a recording / burning / wave tracking/splitting software package. All I want to do with the laptop is record and burn (well, whenever the effin thing will work anyhow)
Thanks for any help.

sounds like possible dropped samples coming over the usb interface.

I'm with you on the Linux thing....the main problem is lack of hardware drivers from the audio interface manufacturers  :(

probably dropped samples.  if you zoom in on the waveform, you may notice a sharp, almost vertical, jump between two samples.

increase your record buffer, defrag your drive, try different recording software (I use nTrack, SF5.0 occationally gave me the clicks).

i use sf6 to record live with a stock ua-5, mics on stage for the band i run sound for at 16/48 and ive never gotten a dropped sample recording in soundforge.  it have heard this happening to people going 24/96, but i doubt its just a soundforge issue

I've read a tweak XP site and did what it said. Disable lots of windows shit essentially (including the NIC). The clicks are still there sporadically. Im gonna try Audacity this weekend and see what happens. If still clicky, Im gonna try Winows 98SE and see what happens. If still clicky, laptop for sale.
I'll be posting Monday with audacity's results.

Exactly.  Going to 98SE will just prove how shitty that OS is now.

Are you sure the problem isn't with the UA-5? I've been having the same issues with random clicks on my transfers: D100 > UA-5 > HD using Audacity. They show up in Audacity and CDWave but aren't on the original DAT. This sucks!

I also periodically get dropped samples recording 24/48 into wavelab thru a UA-5. Gonna try out CDWave next time out, if I can get an external VU meter for my pre. Those beachtek units looks niiiice.
Governor Jim McGreevey was equally disturbed about the upcoming population increase. "New Jersey cannot support all of these wookies," he said. "For starters, we don't have nearly enough kindbud. At best, we can muster up a Q.P. of some beasties, but we've not a dime-bag more."

It's not the UA5 because the DATs Ive made simultaneously are clean and crispy.
So mterry, what did you do, if anything, to solve the USB thing?

i have been eyeing the audiophile firewire version, its a lil pricey, but you could do nice transfers and have the ability to have the 24-96 output

it is pricey, and if i needed a soundcard, i would prolly snag that thing

usb is finnicky at best, maybe 2.0 is better(im sure it is), but 1.1 sucks ass, nuf said

just cant handle all the info its being sent

ALright, I've installed Win2K pro and SF6.0 . Now , Cartman's Brother et al, what are your buffers at and how much RAM you got. And are you's using the USB?
Thanks
Holy shit bean, I went through  the self preservation XP wipe too. I made the 2K boot disc set from the WIN2K cd. Then it was smooth sailing.
