Hoppedup, your lma.org recordings certainly convince me - am just downloading your recent Del McCoury set!

I've also pm'ed Chris with some queries, but I think I'm finally getting there - 2014 is going to get  a lot better.  :D

Thanks, everyone.

Both sound great and show what these mics are capable of.

Fixed that for you, Colin.  And if you want to check out the matrix (well, 4 channel mix anyhow) of the two, it should be there as well.  One of the nicer recordings I've mastered recently! :)

The Church Audio are definitely the way to go. I've got CA-14 omnis that just plain sound good.

As has been mentioned above, you really don't need a preamp for an amplified concert--even your fingerstyle guys are probably going through a PA system. That might be a money saver.

The big choice is cards vs. omnis. If your audiences are quiet, omnis sound more natural, are more forgiving about placement and are richer in the bass. Or with the money you save from skipping the preamp, get both and deploy them depending on the situation.

Funny thing is, if Seth would have been 100% sure the venue would allow him to open tape I'm sure he would have run his Busman's.  They would have been hard pressed to get a better result than the Church mics did in this case.

I think the cardioids have the edge on the omnis on the TTB recording and that matrix is indeed very sweet.

From what I've read here and in PMs, and crucially heard via the archive and sugarmegs, I've decided to go with Chris' own recommendation of the CA11 omnis. I did toy with the idea of cardioid caps for them, but decided finally to go with the CA14 cardioids too, along with a CA 9200. I know many gigs won't need a preamp, but I'd rather have it for those gigs when I'm further away.

Thanks for all the help guys - will report back in the New Year when I've had the chance to use them. Got a couple of gigs early Feb and then March goes crazy!! ;D

Preamp with zero gain is essentially a battery box. Always bring it along.

And happy recording. Don't expect studio "perfection" and enjoy the hi-fi memories. That's all that matters.

Exactly, isn't that why we record and listen to live recordings? :)

You mean youre getting the CA11II Omnis? Chris's newest CA11 omnis right? If you go that route then youll be doing fine. And smart move on the CA14 Cards and a preamp too ;)
