Replacement for AEA stand (need 15 foot stand recommendation)
« on: January 13, 2014, 02:12:02 PM »
I bought an AEA 15 foot stand back in 1999 and it finally seems to have died.

I always liked the AEA because it wasn't as bulky as the bogen stands.

What are people using for a stand that goes to 15 feet these days? For those of you that are going to tell me "you never need 15 feet, etc," and suggest something smaller, please don't bother replying. I am looking for a recommendation for a 15+ foot stand.

Thanks

Why not buy another AEA? I love mine.

Where can I find the same one? Full compass has a 13 footer but it's $300+.  That's a hell of a lot more than I paid originally.

I don't where I can find the 15 footer (and was under the impression that it hasn't been made for years)

Ah, wow, yeah, I just looked and you are right. They are pricey to replace. I hope mine holds up, I'm very fond of it.

I bought one of these a couple of years ago.  The build quality is incredible, and it has an adjustable leg, but it IS heavy (almost 18 pounds).  On sale right now for $200.  Tops out at 14 feet, 7 inches.

Thanks. What adapter(s) do you use for the top?

They have an aluminum one for $15 more that's half the weight

My solution was the Manfrotto 12ft stacking light stand and Mathews baby extension, totaling about $130. B&H's Impact adapter from baby stud to mic insert is another $10. I don't have all the models right at hand.

I think it was something like this:

I know what you mean about weight.  I decided that for certain situations (not a concert in a field, tho) it would be easier to have the mass in the stand, considering how unstable it can be at that height, rather than lug in a bunch of sandbags/weights when staking isn't possible.

Scott that very compact silver stand you had was 15' or am I thinking of something else?
The stand I am thinking of was realllllly compact with the legs folding in tight, seemed like it would be much easier to fit between seats and stuff compared to a typical stand.
Was it stable with large mics or did you only run smaller mics like the DPA on it?
Mics - AKG ck61/ck63 (c480b & Naiant actives), SP-BMC-2
XLR Cables - Silver Path w/Darktrain stubbies
Interconnect Cables - Dogstar (XLR), Darktrain (RCA > 1/8) (1/8 > 1/8), and Kind Kables (1/8f > 1/4)
Preamps - Naiant Littlebox & Tinybox
Recorders - PCM-M10 & DR-60D

Mine was black, but yeah, 15 foot and very easy to fit between seats. I ran very heavy mics on it for years with no issues

If you are willing to take a risk (china) you can save some cash vs the one at b&h

Scott I had the same problem. I left mine in a hotel room in Cindy after phish 2012! I loved that frickin stand. Bought mine in 1999 as well from sonic sense.

I know have two calumet stands. They're pretty durable. I have a Lowel half pole to get mine to around 13-14' if I need them that high. I have Calumet MF6045 and they were like $70 each

I actually might go with the shorter stand + extension. I went to B&H about an hour and a half ago and most of the taller stands are just WAY too bulky now. There's nothing like the old AEA

but maybe a matthews black revenger kit
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/337344-REG/Matthews_387402_Black_Kit_Stand.html

plut an extension
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/33185-REG/Matthews_429499_Telescopic_Baby_Stand_Extension.html

will have a small footprint, get me 15 feet when I want it, and allow me to have a shorter stand in NYC venues where I only want to be 9-10 feet anyway
