Reasonable good sounding pair of omnis?
« on: May 09, 2015, 11:15:22 AM »
I mean cheap, like 500-600 a pair or less. I've literally never pulled a non windfucked Colorado cardioid tape, and plan on getting up there some. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. All respect to churches, they do great work, looking for something full size but lo pro or active I can run right into my Oade mod 661.

Thanks!

Shure KSM 141. Quite nice omni section. I got my pair used for around $500 USD last year. I highly recommend the 141s. Way underrated, making them quite the bargain.

Obvious dumb question, but do you own anything with switchable capsules? AKG omni caps I'm sure are less than that if you have bodies/active cables.

For your specific concern I'd look for some LDs. In my non-scientific opinion, LDs are more wind resistant and they seem to sound better outdoors... even the cardioids.

These would seem to fit your bill, for example: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AT2050?adpos=1o1&creative=55673940721&device=c&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=Cj0KEQjw4LaqBRD60pfSn43ZwLQBEiQAJv5FLNaS6r09xwCsKv_tf79hawMzaPyALQS9I8XhItRvTHYaAowk8P8HAQ

Or for an SDC, these are close to your range. I've used the cards and hypers from this line and really like them. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AT4022

I only have a pair of 4022s so nothing switchable.

I was also thinking switchable LD, I've always wanted a pair and it would be nice to have a cardioid backup option too. Anyone have experience with the busman switchable large diaphragms?

Thanks!

Actually you could spend even less while supporting one of our community.  Jon at Naiant makes a few different omnis and he could advise you which would be best for you.  I own a model that was discontinued in 2008 but you'd never know from listening that they cost me under $70 for the pair.  Even when I eventually get a set of the OM1s I'll keep these X-Qs, especially for my outdoor / matching band gigs.  They seem like they should last forever.

The line audio om1s are said to be good.  Also, Rode has an omni capsule for the NT5 that is also supposed to be good.

If you could find a pair of the shure ksm 141s used, that would give you card and omni options.

Really impressed with the OM1. It looks like no hype is the only reseller, it has an eBay store selling each with shock, out for about 170 U.S.. Anyone know of another seller?

Thanks all!

Line Audio has no USA retailers.  I bought my CM3s directly from NoHypeAudio, a Belgian dealer right through their website.  JP is a great guy to deal with, and I corresponded with him over email beforehand.  He said that he has USA customers all the time.  The site says that there are still some OM1 in stock.
http://nohypeaudio.com/lineaudioproducts.htm

Just add the 2 mics to your cart along with the "Fixed postage (Bpost international - with tracking)" on the right (30 EUR).  Line Audio does not do "matched pairs" but instead tests at manufacture and rejects those out of range.  Again, contact JP at NoHypeAudio and he can explain this more thoroughly.  Don't bother with the eBay store.  The NoHype website is really the way to go for ordering Line Audio stuff.

The only other option is ordering direct from the manufacturer in Sweden, but it is a little more complicated than dealing with NoHypeAudio and there's usually a waiting list (it's a one-man operation).

More Line Audio stuff:

Anyone know of a u.s. Om1 retailer?

Buy the OM1 direct from the manufacturer HERE - ordering info is here.

Best value omni on the market at the price, I think.

At the current conversion rate, that's about $121.66 USD per OM1.  It's a small body mic with a black finish.  Just about what any taper would want.

From what I understand, there's usually a wait list when ordering directly from Roger.  If you order from JP at NoHypeAudio (see my earlier post), you know that he either has them in stock now or he doesn't, and he can reliably tell you when his stock will be refilled.  Manufacturer direct appears to be slightly less expensive, though.  At the moment, a pair of OM1 with shipping is 2148 SEK = $260.59.  From NoHype, 250 EUR = $285.24.  Personally, I plan to purchase my OM1s from NoHype just because of my great experience with him before.

Also, US buyers would not have to pay import duty, as the cost is well below the threshold.

Also had a great experience buying from JP...patient with my questions despite me not exactly dropping a fortune, and I like buying from good retailers, it's well worth a few bucks.
