attn: computer uh....geeks re: dual boot systems
« on: July 03, 2004, 11:31:39 PM »
ok so i'm currently running windows 2000, cuz my soundcard w/ digital I/O, only has stable drivers that run on w2k.  normally this is ok, but now i want to use windows XP to harness the power or a few certain video editing proggys.

so here's what i'm thinking.  i could do a fresh install of XP as my main OS on the first HD.  then afterwards i install w2k on my second HD.  when i need to do audio transfering, i just point my CMOS/BIOS (or whatever it's called) to boot up from HD-2.

does this sound do-able?  are there any obvious problems w/ this setup?

TIA

you don't need to keep them that separate. dual boot with one HD is doable.  windows has a boot menu if more than one OS is installed. all you need is separate windirs - since win2K probably lives in C:\winnt\ it will probably install XP to c:\windows\
you can also install most apps over-top of themselves - for instance if you have photoshop in c:\program files\adobe\ now, you just install it in XP to the same place, and then it can run in both OSes.  that's what i've always done, to conserve disk space.
