Any recommendations of retailers with decent prices on external HDs these days?

Buy the drive and the enclosure separately.  You'll save a ton of money.

Like John said buying the enclosure and drive seperatly is cheaper.  I own 2 external enclosures. One made by Bafo, works fine but the fan is extremly noisy.  The second enclosure was made by I/O Magic and is very quiet and is overall a much nicer product.
