Anyone here use a USBpre1.5?
« on: July 20, 2004, 11:15:20 AM »
Okay,

I don't understand why I'm having such issues with this thing.  I've managed to figure out all my other problems with this, but now i've got a new one.  It seems like no matter what my input when I'm recording to the powerbook through the USBpre I get static every 3 or 4 minutes (randomly, not at specific times).  It's on the origional MK012>USBpre>Peak4LE, it's on the DAT backup when I convert it through my SPDIF in D7>USBpre (SPDIF in)>Peak, and when I did it on the MD backup I ran MD>USBpre (tape in)>Peak.  I know it looks like peak is the common part, but it does the same thing in spark.  All I can figure is it's either the Powerbook or the USBpre.

Any Insights?

Thanks!
Cal

I thought it might be a cable issue as well, but then realized if it was I wouldn't have the problem using the 7pin>coax as well as the 1/8>RCA.

What setup do you run?

thanks

If all of your deck, powerbook and MD have the same issues. I'd say it's related to the USBpre. Maybe a issue with one of the cables or one of the mics (if it shows in one channel). Just a few thoughts.

Here's what I ran...

AT853>SP Batt Box>MD
MK012>USBpre>Powerbook
USBpre Headphone Out>D7 line in
SBD>DA-20 MKII

The DATs and MD are all clean until I convert them trough the USBpre (SPDIF in and Tape in respectively), the AIFF file on the powerbook had the static problems.  And any AIFFs of the stuff I converted through the USBpre has the static problem.

I figure it either needs to be an internal USBpre problem, a USB cable problem (i'm gonna try swapping them out), or a problem with a setting in the powerbook.  I've gone through everything Sound Devices had me do to get clean recordings in the powerbook, so I figure it must be with the Pre Itself.  I'm gonna try running it again on Sunday at a show, so I'm gonna do a bunch of tests before then.  Just didn't know if anyone else had these problems.

Are there any power management settings that you can disable? I run mine with a sony picturebook, I got lots of crap when recording until I went to settings>power management>power management off.

You might need to play with your buffer size too?

Good luck,
Ben

did you try increasing the recording buffer size in spark or peak, this seems
to be a common problem with alot of external audio cards.  try
messing around with those settings, and if you still have problems, a call
to sound devices might be in order.  or if you can try the usbpre on a friends
computer, and see if the same things happen
