one more question- if the rec levels seem low  i.e not near zero on the meter should i switch from line in to mic in?

no because even if the levels look fine you can overload the mic preamp...distorting the tape. if you are doing rock shows, I would never use the mic preamp...will definitely cause brickwalling..go line in

success. despite the levels being a bit low and the bass still very strong a nice recording of the npg.only real problem ran out of tape before the encore.this would have been preveted by not taping the opening act. damn.ok any way to boost levels in when using the line in mode?

a small suggestion... use the "HOLD" slide switch. it will be your best friend. engage it as soon as you get out of your car and heading towards the venue and disengage it only to start the recording and re-engage it during recording.  the HOLD switch disables EVERY function of the M1 except for the level dial (which should be taped down as someone mentioned).  once you've got your level set, tape it down and just put the deck away and try not to check levels too much.

as for going from DAT > cdr, the best way is to use a 7pin cable for a digital output (s/pdif) from your deck and > (either a sound card or a standalone cd recorder).
