VX pocket 440 Dongle: Chop off analog I/O cabling??
« on: November 29, 2004, 02:46:27 PM »
Hey all-

I was wondering if it is possible to chop off all the extra analog input/output XLR cables on the VX Pocket 440 dongle and have it still work. For field recording all I really need is the SPDIF in, and the analog I/O cables add a ton of weight and bulk to the dongle assembly. Anyone tried this?

Thanks in advance,
Ben

Ben, yer better off saving your stock dongle & having Ian make a new one w/only SPDIF. Dunno if he has the ability to make them yet, though.... Shouldn't be an issue with chopping it off, however, provided you don't create shorts in the wiring.
Governor Jim McGreevey was equally disturbed about the upcoming population increase. "New Jersey cannot support all of these wookies," he said. "For starters, we don't have nearly enough kindbud. At best, we can muster up a Q.P. of some beasties, but we've not a dime-bag more."

Do it!  You will not regret it.  It takes about a pound of weight of the cable.  The vx 440 dongles have been on hold for months. Mine works fine without all that extra crap.

Thanks guys, that was just what I was hoping to hear. Gonna order an extra and hack the one at home!!   :)

no!!! I wouldn't do it.  Wait for Ian's cable, he's offering a good price.  Those 4 analog inputs are part of the beauty of the 440.  What if you wanted to matrix? I agree it's a monster, but god damn, don't break your gear, what if you wanted to sell it someday?

so Ben, have you stopped using the usb-pre for your s/pdif input and went solely with the vx pocket yet?

I own one and use it in the field all the time.  I say don't chop it, but hey, it's your gear, so do what you like...

Got a V2 and 440. It is not that bad. I would keep them on there as well. Of course, I use the analogs only really most of the time to do matrices with the 440. V2 is sitting here collecting dust. Not for too much longer though, gonna have a 2nd lappy for 24bit patching outta someone elses rig. :)

I would definitely like to try doing some aud/sbd matrixes with the 440, but also want to have a streamlined and minimalist dongle for those times when stealthability is a factor. The dongles are inexpensive enough for me to justify having one hacked one and one intact one. Given the type of taping I have been doing lately (mostly stealth stuff), I would probably use the hacked one 90% of the time anyway.

D- haven't gotten this thing up and running yet but once I do I will probably stop using the USBPre for SPDIF input to the lappy. Taking the USBPre out of the picture gives me a much more stealthable rig that I can fit into a Mountainsmith hip sack: 4022's, V3 & ecocharge, and Picturebook (w/ VX 440).     :)

Take care,
Ben

your the only fucker i know that stealths a fucking laptop ;)

fwiw, i had one HELL of a time getting my vx pocket v2 to work with my picturebook... it was all about using an old driver they had on thier site, that made aLL the difference... if you have any problems try an older driver!
