REAL happy with my nec 3500a (3520a listed in the previous post is likely quite similar) a 16x dual layer drive -- looks like it can be had for just over $60, shipped -- no-brainer to recommend as it hasn't coastered on me and is FAR quieter than the cd burner it replaced.

That means you can get it for $100 just about any place else.

I had to return a bunch of shit my mom bought there this week, and take her to Micro-Center.

Comp USA was charging $8 for a 6 pack of thumb screws 4 for 10 at Micro Center.

All in all I saved enough $$ to buy a CDRW drive for her on top of all the other stuff I replaced for the same $$.

COMP USA sucks. The staff is clueless, the managers are rude (ymmv), and the prices are way too high.

NECs from newegg are the best.  I have had 2 different one on 2 computers and only time I made coasters was a user error, since I fixed myself haven't had one problem

Here's another vote of confidence for the NewEgg purchased NEC 3500 (16x dual layer, dual format).

Got it for $63 shipped.

Installed in 15 minutes.

Zero coasters.

I just got a Liteon 16X double layer unit and have put a half dozen dvds through, with no issues.  Like mentioned above, I have also burned CDs and this unit is ALOT quieter than my Liteon 52X CD burner was...

don't forget to go to http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=86 read up on how to flash it and get rid of the riplock and better burning speeds than the dvds say  8x burns at 12x+ for me depending on media

Picked up two external Sony dual format DRX-530ul right before Christmas at www.ubid.com, refurbs, but look and act brand new, $65 each with shipping.I have not checked there in a bit, but bought several md's there years ago, like the MZr-37 and 70, for less than $50 a piece. Sometimes worth a look there.

16x and double layer are such new tech few refurbs would be around yet. As to the speed boost mentioned,it can't do 18x on 16x media can it? Right now finding 16x blanks is tough. The NEC and Lite-on 16x drives do cd-r at 48x,8 months ago the fastest DVD burners did 8x DVD-24x CDR-and cost more

alright - first go here http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=105676
You will want to dump your current firmware to a file in case something goes wrong

download - http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/2.FC_QV3ME.rar - this is some new firmware

load the new firmware into the flasher you downloaded above and flash.
Reboot
download http://www.dvd-recordable.org/wwwimgs/media/flash/dvdinfopro/dvdinfo.zip and check to make sure you have the firmware loaded.
now rip a dvd, if you rip above 2.0x you have done it, if you burn the DVD faster than what it should (faster than 8x if they are 8x DVDs) you are good to go
Toshiba HD-A2 > HDMI > Panasonic TH-50PX600U
