Topic: DPA 4022 Alternative?

Anyone have any idea if DPA plans to release a cardiod version of the 4060/4061 type lavalier mics. I like the sound of the 4022's but I wish I could run a pair with a simple battery box setup like I do my 4060's. The 4060>BB>M1 is just so simple and discrete/easy to carry that adding a pre-amp and cable set up to run 4022's has hindered me from going that route.

They have mini-card "headband" style mics. However, they have a near-field bass boost which renders them pretty useless for what we do -- the far-field rolloff leaves you with almost no signal below 200 Hz.

What's wrong with 4022 > line transformers > m1? I've never tried it, but why wouldn't that work?

Because the mics need power.    It'd have to be:

4022 > PS-2 > line transformers > M1

By the time you chuck the PS-2 into the mix, you might as well run a small preamp (e.g. MP-2, PSP-2, Sonosax SX-M2) as it's not much - if any - bigger.  If budget-challenged, I believe the above would work.

Cool thanks for the info!  Keeping it simple, what I want is to have a Core Sound HEB/DPA 4060 DPA like setup which is cardiod.

I wouldn't hold your breath.  there was a big thread on these dpa mini cards awhile back and i am almost sure the answer was that no other mini card was coming out.  at853's are pretty small cards i think, maybe check them out. 

Aren't that great if they aren't phantom powered... can't handle higher SPL's... anyways, I took a pic for comparison sake between a 4061 and an AT853:

I was just thinking...

You could probably get your 4022's modded to the mini-XLR ends or whatever type of connection it is that your battery box takes in (or just use an adapter, though this would not be as stealthy). Then it might be possible to use these with a battery box assuming the BB is providing 48V phantom. Just thinking off the top of my head here... Would this work?

i know the dpa's can sound great, but i just don't care for omni's at loud rock shows when they're in a hat or something...

What didn't you like about them?

I'm the exact opposite of you- I've had all kinds of problems stealthing with cards (and presumably they'd be worse with hypers) - because of the directionality, they seemed to be much more sensitive to my movements, and/or the movements of people nearby.

Once I got my omni caps for the AT's, I never used the others.  So far I LOVE the 4061s.  Both through an AD-20 and my mod SBM-1.

AT 943/ES  cards. 
Not quite as smooth as a 402x, but ain't too shabby. A bit more airy than the DPAs

Never ran them with batts.

Does anyone have any idea if the 4022's need all of 48v to achieve full fidelity? I was wondering if they could be modified to run on a battery box setup similar or identical to the 4060's.

I'm pretty sure they need 48V, as do most mics of that type.
